Bleeding Air out of radiator

Please can someone explain how to properly bleed the air out of the system. As the radiator on my series 2 is not getting warm all over. I am not sure if the thermostat is working. It's not over heating.. many thanks

I always used to run the car without the cap on, no pressure would build up but the air would make it way out ?
when the level drops you can top her up...
could be totally wrong but thats what I do
