Today there was a long delay(3-5 secs) between selecting drive and drive being taken up. Transmission was hot/warm after a 50 mile drive and behaved normally shifting gear, box has done 80k miles, any ideas.

Hi Dave ,
Could be a sign that although the gearbox is "sealed for life" it could do with a fluid and filter change , just make sure whoever does it uses the correct fluid  ,

Hope this helps ,

A delay on the take-up of drive can be caused by a low fluid level. Hence, a quick check under the car for leaks would be advisable to avoid being stranded with an overheated or damaged gearbox. Mike

Fluid level OK, looking at the XJ forum the neutral switch is mentioned. Problems have been caused by the switch sticking intermittently which would cause the symptoms I am getting. I have not yet found the time to troubleshoot the logic of this but I am going down that avenue first.

Any other tips welcome

Hi, Don,t want to be prophet of doom but I had the same fault on my previous XK at about the same mileage. The cause was the input shaft which totally failed in the end
