MY 97XK8 already with 19" wheels and wish to upgrade to R Performance brakes. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? Thanks.
My list to date;
1. 4-Jaguar/Brembo 4 pot calipers w/new caliper mounting screws (I already have these.)
2. 4- Disc.'s front 355mm (14.1") & Rear 330mm (13"rear) manufactured by Italia. (supposedly clearing customs now)
3. Proper pads, unsure of material/brand/source & price.
4. Braidedlines, again unsure brand/source & price.
5. Flush system & add new Brembo brake fluid.

My list to date;
1. 4-Jaguar/Brembo 4 pot calipers w/new caliper mounting screws (I already have these.)
You will also need to purchase a pair of front dust shields and either cutdown or replace the rear dust shields
2. 4- Disc.'s front 355mm (14.1") & Rear 330mm (13"rear) manufactured by Italia. (supposedly clearing customs now)
Don't have any experience in using aftermarket discs
3. Proper pads, unsure of material/brand/source & price.
I'd go for the genuine Jaguar / Brembo pads
4. Braidedlines, again unsure brand/source & price.
Either use the Jaguar hose or the Goodrich hose both are stainless steel braided
5. Flush system & add new Brembo brake fluid.
Don't think Brembo do a specific fluid , the standard Jaguar fluid is more than adequate , don't use "silicone" fluid
In addition to the above you will have to tap out the mounting hole threads in the vertical links if you have the later calipers , early calipers have a separate mounting bracket and don't require the holes retapping
Hope this helps ,
Nik

The holes need to be drilled & tapped only if you are using the later calipers, if you have the early radial mount type as fitted to a Silverstone or XKR-100 you can use the original bolts, otherwise you have to drill & tap the holes. You could also upgrade to the even bigger Alcon calipers but that requires even more work.

Nik,
Thanks for the response, got caught up in the Holiday a bit, yes sir a big help indeed, Thank you.
1.Regarding the dust shields, I had originally considered leaving those off all together, any thoughts. I took a physical look at potential fitment by removing the wheels and existing calipers, thinking I may get away with widening the existing rear shield cutout to accept the larger caliper. However, unless you know something I do not, by increasing the rear disc diameter by 25mm (1”) will require new rear dust anyway, just as the front. Do you know of an online source, other than Jaguar Dealer for these items?
2.Yes, I wanted Brembo discs too (F-JLM21749, R-JLM21748), but got a bit ahead of myself with an order and received the wrong size Brembo’s. The discs supplier Brakeworld charges a restocking fee (up to 25%) while their price on the proper Brembo’s is steep, about $1,400 for the set. So I’m kind of locked into Italia’s- about $900.00 which have a silver metallic finish, this will go well with the present wheels. The working specifications are more than acceptable.
3.Pad’s: I have read many negative posts regarding Brembo pads, dusting/squeaking a lot, are you strictly an OEM style owner? The person from Brakeworld (John) said the front calipers typically used on a F40 & in 50% of Brembo big brake packages (pad# MXD155OAB) and the rears typically used on Lotus (pad# MXD275OAA). I am considering Akebono pads at this stage.
4.Yes, to the; Goodrich hoses, best choice.
5.Brake fluid comments. Interesting comments regarding the silicone based fluid, obviously a compatibility issue with the seals in the braking system. Brembo does make a fluid or at least brands one, BREMBO BRAKE FLUID SPORT.EVO 500++, but have no idea about its base compounds.
6.Many thanks for the tapping of the caliper carriers had no idea. Indeed all the calipers have threaded “casted carriers” as portion of the whole (inside) caliper housing. There is a significant size difference between front and rear caliper. (F-RH, #JLM21503, LH-4) cannot find the rear parts numbers anywhere.
Cheers!

1.Regarding the dust shields, I had originally considered leaving those off all together, any thoughts.
You can leave them off with no problems , Just prefer the look with them fitted

The accepted way of doing it is to cut the outer folded edge off the rear backplate and increase the size of the cutout to accept the Brembo caliper , if you want to replace them I don't know of any other option than using the genuine Jaguar backplates ............ problem 1. They are very expense compared to the front Brembo backplates problem 2. You will need to remove the rear hubs to fit them !!!!
2.Yes, I wanted Brembo discs too (F-JLM21749, R-JLM21748), but got a bit ahead of myself with an order and received the wrong size Brembo’s.
Which component was the wrong size and in what size do you have/need?

3.Pad’s: I have read many negative posts regarding Brembo pads, dusting/squeaking a lot, are you strictly an OEM style owner?
I'm only a Jaguar style owner if the parts are superior to others .......... Yes their pads do dust more but some of the well known after market pads that don't dust very much but wear the discs out at an alarming rate....... cheaper to clean the wheels regularly than replace the discs ??????
It's a little known fact that it's not the pads that cause the squealing but the holes in the discs rapidly blocking up with brake pad dust
The person from Brakeworld (John) said the front calipers typically used on a F40 & in 50% of Brembo big brake packages (pad# MXD155OAB) and the rears typically used on Lotus (pad# MXD275OAA). I am considering Akebono pads at this stage.

If you have the Later front calipers you will need to tap out the thread to suit DO NOT drill the existing thread out prior to tapping , the existing threaded hole is the correct size for retapping without any further modification ( the rear caliper threads are the same size as the standard caliper threads ) Cheers!

I presently have new drilled/slotted Brembo’s (holes are counter sunk) 305mm (OEM size) front and rear sitting in boxes
. I believe what came on the XK8 these calipers came off (and Brakeworld agrees), based on what I have been able to find is this: 355mm (front) and 330mm (rear) drilled/slotted Brembo’s ventilated rotors.

It's a little known fact that it's not the pads that cause the squealing but the holes in the discs rapidly blocking up with brake pad dust the cure is to make sure the pads backing has a suitable anti-squealing compound and to clean the holes out with a drill regularly and slightly countersinking the holes , a lot of work ................ alternatively don't fit Jaguar /Brembo discs , fit a quality aftermarket discs that are both ventilated and Grooved instead of being crossdrilled ( early Brembo/Jaguar discs were available WITHOUT crossdrillings)
The more I work on this car, the more I completely appreciate the quality of engineering that went into it!

Think I have it
; rears are good to go, bolting wise after the back plate is addressed. Re-thread the front calipers without widening/drilling the existing bore of the caliper carrier, utilizing the same size existing bolts/threads used to bolt the caliper to the backside of the hub. I must ask this question: Why was this done in the first place?
Do you know how one removes the front back plate/dust sheild?
Now, you have alluded to, “if I have the later calipers”. Based on early posting I believe I do, because the carriers are casted as part of the caliper housing (both front and rear) Do you know if this is a true statement?
Cheers!
BTW: started a new thread on front seat heat!

Once you have removed the old discs and calipers the back plate/heatshield is held on with three "torx" screws , heat and allow to cool before attempting to remove the Torx screws as they will probably be siezed

BTW: started a new thread on front seat heat!
Thanks for the response, got caught up in the Holiday a bit, yes sir a big help indeed, Thank you.
1.Regarding the dust shields, I had originally considered leaving those off all together, any thoughts.
You can leave them off with no problems , Just prefer the look with them fitted
I took a physical look at potential fitment by removing the wheels and existing calipers, thinking I may get away with widening the existing rear shield cutout to accept the larger caliper. However, unless you know something I do not, by increasing the rear disc diameter by 25mm (1”) will require new rear dust anyway, just as the front. Do you know of an online source, other than Jaguar Dealer for these items?
The accepted way of doing it is to cut the outer folded edge off the rear backplate and increase the size of the cutout to accept the Brembo caliper , if you want to replace them I don't know of any other option than using the genuine Jaguar backplates ............ problem 1. They are very expense compared to the front Brembo backplates problem 2. You will need to remove the rear hubs to fit them !!!! I do not wish to remove hubs, outer folded edge it is and a widening of the existing-out!
2.Yes, I wanted Brembo discs too (F-JLM21749, R-JLM21748), but got a bit ahead of myself with an order and received the wrong size Brembo’s.
Which component was the wrong size and in what size do you have/need?
I presently have new drilled/slotted Brembo’s (holes are counter sunk) 305mm (OEM size) front and rear sitting in boxes
I'm only a Jaguar style owner if the parts are superior to others .......... Yes their pads do dust more but some of the well known after market pads that don't dust very much but wear the discs out at an alarming rate....... cheaper to clean the wheels regularly than replace the discs ??????
If you have the Later front calipers you will need to tap out the thread to suit DO NOT drill the existing thread out prior to tapping , the existing threaded hole is the correct size for retapping without any further modification ( the rear caliper threads are the same size as the standard caliper threads ) Cheers!
Think I have it
Do you know how one removes the front back plate/dust sheild?
Once you have removed the old discs and calipers the back plate/heatshield is held on with three "torx" screws , heat and allow to cool before attempting to remove the Torx screws as they will probably be siezed
Now, you have alluded to, “if I have the later calipers”. Based on early posting I believe I do, because the carriers are casted as part of the caliper housing (both front and rear) Do you know if this is a true statement?
Correct , you have the "later" calipers
Cheers!
