Floorpan Plates

Postby MisterB » Sat Nov 08, 2008 2:02 pm

XK8 Coupe, 1997 - When last on a ramp the mechanic noticed two square plates, about six inches, under the area of the front seats; the plates are starting to show signs of corrosion. Can anyone tell me what purpose these plates serve, and if they can be removed and the floor pan made good? My best guess is that they are there as part of the construction process as pads for supporting arms of the assembly machinery.

Strengthening plates for the floorpans, a common problem and an MoT fail, had both of mine welded/plated for MoT at Arun last year for about £150 the pair

Essentially the floor pan of the XK8 was derived from the series XJ pan and hence it contains some old thinking including on the issue of rustproofing! I would be reluctant to alter the floor pan construction rather than repair and rustproof it properly for the simple reason that alterations here would affect the way that the shell folds and crushes during an accident. Any change which affects the way crash energy is absorbed could be detrimental to occupant damage and survival risks. Mike.

You might find it helpful to look at the postings under "removal and replacement of sill trim" dated 20th Sept. 2007. Mine were cut out and replaced by carefully lifting and positioning the carpets. The seats were not removed.
