The car is a w reg 2000 s-type 3.0 auto, it just will not rev above 2000 stationary, when driving it fine if you take it steady and does 70+ no problem, but if you try and drive a little faster it back fires sputters and loses power. Its something silly like a sensor i know - but which one?
Will not rev over 2k revs stationary

In my experience, both with V6 and V8 cars, they do not rev up above 2000rpm when stationary. This is probably to avoid mis use by over reving the engine components when not under load. It is not a problem.
The misfires you describe, again in my experience are probably down to worn spark plugs or a failing coil. I cured my similar symptoms by changing the plugs at an early mileage. Mine broke down at 52k miles. The expectation of 60k on a plug set is in my opinion unrealistic.
The cleaning of the throttle body butterfly plate with carburettor cleaner, a toothbrush and clean lint free cloth is another hot tip. pay particular attention to the areas above and below the butterfly plate. Get them spotlessly free of crankcase breather residue. It realy does help.
