Hi, I have a 1999 xk8 which has show an error message relating to the abs and traction control. My local (non specialist) garage have said that a new abs module and pump are required (£2000)!!!! However the local main dealer has told me in a conversation on the phone that it is more likely to be just the module (£1000)!!!
Has anyone had a similar problem and does anyone know of a source for second hand components of this kind? Could it be something that might be remedied more simply. (I think my local garage brought a guy in with sme sort of testing machine )
Hope someone can suggest something

Alan, at a wild guess, you are most likely talking about a well documented XK8 problem... TRAC NOT AVAIL/ ASC NOT AVAIL/ ABS problem.

This is a common issue. The first step is to get the car hooked up to either the Jaguar or Autologic diagnostics systems, preferably operated by an experienced operator since it helps to understand why certain components give failure readings. Not surprisingly, the computer control modules don't like water so make sure you check for nearby blocked drains. The modules can also suffer from dry joints which can sometimes be fixed by dextrous use of old fashioned soldering. If the module is the culprit there isn't much to lose by trying to repair it. If soldering works it will be a lot cheaper than replacing the module with a new or second hand item. Several well known breakers advertise in Jaguar Enthusiast and these businesses can be useful sources of spare components. Mike.
