Chain tensioners

I know this subject has been much discussed but nevertheless would like a bit of advice. My car is a 2001 with about 31k on it. Runs nice and quiet and has full Jag fsh. Question is do I do the precautionary timing chain tensioner renewal (top and bottom?) or not, and how much should I pay for it?
My local agent has quoted £380.00 inclusive for the top chain.
Comments on whether to do the water pump as well would also be helpful.

It's always a worry. To gamble or not to gamble? That is the question... The water pump carries markings which will indicate whether it's one of the designs at risk (see other replies). If the top tensioners have not been upgraded to the 4.2 litre versions, I think there's enough evidence around to suggest that it would be £380 well spent. You'll sleep all the better for doing it. Hi Allan, as you say the subject has been discussed a lot i had mine done about 5 months ago, and they were the second gereration type, but they were cracked and would not have lasted for a lot longer, i also had the pump done and the stat ,as they are all known problems so if the stat goes then the veins get ripped off the pump that causes the engine to overheat and loads of problems so get them done Alan then you can forget them and just enjoy thje car
