How to spoil a good and original design. Nothing wrong with it , but the unique quality of the XJS has been removed. Artless and bland would best describe it. Wonder how many they sold.
Have seen several attempts to improve the original including extensive and voluptuous body kits - all a total failure. I also include open versions which to my eye are an obviously 'altered ' design. Good airflow and efficient aircon every time for me , then just sit back and drive as far as you wish.

I agree with Paul - the buttress makes the car so unique and on the facelift they are more subtle which I personally love. I hate the bumpers so if I can find someone who can provide suitable replacements I will be very happy.
I have to admit that I never really considered the XJS a 'pretty' car but when you own one and drive it, it really is the sum of its parts and I for one would not change any of them (except the bumpers!)
Another way of looking at it is for me the only real expereince is behind the wheel looking down that bonnet. I don't care about its bottom as I hardly ever see it!

A bit boxy, may be inspire by Volvo? Actually reminds me a bit of the old Volvo 240.
I see from your signature that you have a Celebration which will have the one piece bumpers. I prefer this design over the original steel girder of the earlier cars. American legislation killed off many good cars designs with impact bumpers being one of the biggest sins.

There are 3 pics of a stunning Lynx Eventer. Boy, this looks so right. I want one! Has to be the ultimate estate car.

Yes - it is the celebration which I am very happy with.
If they had been able to integrate the bumpers with the bodywork as they do in modern cars then the final result could have been really sweet rather than what looks kind of 'frumpy'!

Greeban - frumpy? Park your car where you can see and appreciate its lines as often as possible, spend some time just looking and you will come to like the bumpers, which I think are the best of the various designs. How would you improve them?

Man this is ugly!
The best bit of the xjs is the rear butress bits
that just looks really bodged

Well, I like the Arden 2+2. A very brave styling attempt that Jaguar did actually try as a one-off (an XJ6C roof with Daimler fluted grills/badges too if I recall correctly). The Arden looks just as elegant, equal to the Eventer Series 2 (big bumper) especially.
I wouldn't quite want to give my right arm for one of these late Eventers (there are only 15 apparently), but it would be a close call! There is an excellent Belgian web-site about these models, go find (http://www.lynxeventer.com/en/). Lots of info. there too.
Anyway, I like the buttresses and agree they make the XJS what it is. But that hasn't stopped me fullfilling an apprentice ambition I had for a hatchback XJS, keeping the roof un-altered. This is nearing completion in my garage now (only trim to do), so it will be out there soon. Watch various spaces particularly the Jaguar Enthusiast for an article hopefully later in the year. I might even let the forum in on it first and hope to be at the Jaguar Day at Bosworth in July.
I could tease you with a photo. but that would only ruin the surprise. People who've seen it think it really works and looks like the factory did it, which was the intention. A one-off (not counting the Zantia rear ended version).
If poeple didn't try things, we would be able to comment on what's good or bad. To my mind, they each have a place and the rare ones sometimes become more sought after, just like JaguarSport variants will always aave a place and a certain value higher than standard model, to those collecters who have the desire. Jaguar history is littered with these limited builds; Coombes, Ecurie Ecosse, Lynx, Lister, Paul Bailey, Paul Banham etc. When you see one, it promotes discussion at least!
Enjoy life and do what you want. I know I've been very brave with my rather dishy XJS Coupe (photo's in the forum gallary - not converted!!), but it's my indulgence and makes standard ones rarer still (as does racing them as a lot get trashed - I've been there and seen them done!).
Regards,
JaguarMike

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess,
I've seen the banham one b4, and you guessed correctly.
I really dont like it, like the xjss though.
To be honest i like the butress'es so much i am thinking of having them on the front too!
You know at the front where there is chrome trims running upright, either side of the screen.
Well instead of that, how about 2 more butress'es!!
I cant wait its going to look great.
