Fuel gauge - anti slosh device

Postby TomCotton » Mon Jun 07, 2010 9:16 pm

Can anyone assist, please? I have a 93 coupe. The fuel gauge is dead when the ignition is on and the fuel light is lit. This is despite a full tank. It would seem to be the anti slosh device. The question is where is it and how is it accessed without breaking anything! Any help would be appreciated.

Fuel gauge - anti slosh device

Why do you think it's the anti slosh device, Tom?

Couldn't it be the fuel sender?

The wires for this come out behind the spare wheel. It's a five minute job to disconnect them and check the resistance of the sender unit. My bet is that this will show open circuit or at least high resistance.

The spec is 16 - 18 Ω full and 250Ω empty.

Fuel gauge - anti slosh device

Al, many thanks for your help. When switching on the ignition after a long period of not being used the fuel gauge comes to life, reading 3/4 full. After about 30 seconds it drops to totally empty and the fuel light comes on. Now that I have the impedence measurements I will go and check the sender unit. Thanks for your help again.

Fuel gauge - anti slosh device

Tom

If it is the anti-slosh module they are available new from Jaguar (£60+) or second hand from Grublogger for £25.

The illustration on the JDHT website (search on part no DAC7624) gives an idea of where to find it and what it looks like.

Fuel gauge - anti slosh device

Tom,

In my experience, pessimistic gauge fluctuation such as you have described is usually caused by either the float/sender or the anti-slosh module or the wiring or earth conncetions on the gauge. Minor gauges on facelift cars can be prone to errors because of wiring / electrical connections on the gauges themselves. Sometimes it's just a case of nipping up the earth screws.

The anti-slosh module is difficult to find. I eventually found it out of sight behind a metal panel that is accessible in the nearside rear inner wing. You need to take out the interior fabric panel and then you can feel the module by putting your hand behind the panel. It's like an elongated relay.

If you do think it's the anti-slosh module, I can sell you a used one if that may help. I recently managed to source a new one very cheaply (£15 + postage) and I used it to try and cure a very similar problem. It doesn't seem to have cured the problem so now I'll change the sender and float (I was lucky enough to find a new one of those very cheaply as well!). If you want my original one, you can have it for £15 + postage. If it doesn't cure it and you still think that's the problem, send it back to me and I'll give you your money back.

Good luck
