New forum topic.....excuses to wife / partner?

Hi Folks

After going through the initial stages of an xjs renovation and realising that they are indeed a way of burning money very quickly, I thought it would be good to start a thread (just for fun) on how people go about telling their other half's how much they have spent! (If they indeed come clean!)

I know I found myself being uncharacteristically vague about what was being done and the cost! I did have a day of reckoning however, which was a difficult few days!

The "techniques" people use, may be of interest to others contemplating such an endeavour!!!

good thread..........

i actually turn the tables on the softer sex...

i do this by telling them that anything i have bought for my own XJS restoration was a bargain at a fraction of the original cost ...... just like the shoes she bought last week

and it works most of the time, lol

i have got quite good at it over the last four and a half years its taken me so far , lol

nearly ready for painting !!!!

Before I go to get some horrifically expensive part, I usually over estimate the cost of having someone do the job for us and then quote double the cost of whatever it is that's needed.

When the price finally comes out well below that, harmony reigns. Until the next gremlin strikes.

Good thread

I usually lie about cost. Then when bank statment arrives I hide it this usually gives a few days respite to formulate a plausble excuse thers are my usual ones...........

1 I had to get it to keep on top of all jobs as it will cost more in long run if I don't.
2 It was essential for mot.
3 It really was a bargain at that price.
4 I have not bought anything for a while.
5 They don't come up for sale very often.
6 I will sell the old one on ebay.
7 Yes I dont mind if you go shopping with your sister.

Hope these may help

Best Regards Mark.

Fantastic!!!

I can see a top 10 list developing!

I've certainly used these:-

1.
I had to get more work done as it would have cost more to fix it later.

2.
This is an appreciating classic...one day it will be worth 40k! (ok..maybe not until 2310!)

3.
I don't smoke...I need some vices....would you rather I was out womanising???

4.
These cars are an endangered species....I'm protecting our heritage.

5.
Holidays are overrated anyway.

keep em coming!

Ask the garage to separate the bill. Pay the expensive part on your credit card, pay a small amount from your current account. That way, the wife always sees a nice low bill coming off the bank account.

"I told you dear, your Corsa in much more expensive to run than the XJS"

Seriously, my wife is pretty cool with the XJS (and its bills). I don't play golf (or any other money guzzling pastime) other than run and maintain the car.

We kind got off to a bad start however. I was busy on the phone organising the deal with the garage when she came home from work. Talk about getting caught with your trousers down.

Have to say Mrs C has been really good over the 8 years I was doing the RESTO mind you if another project landed in the garage which needed quite as much money spending on it I reckon I would have to sell my body (for spare parts!!!!!!!!!!) to fund it.

I am about to add up all my receipts and find out the total cost of spares (OMG!!!!!!) but I do remember the cost of rebuilding the front and rear suspension, brakes etc was a particularly big bill from David Manners

Thank you Mrs C for your co-operation and support :D
