Update on renovation at Hollygrove

Hi Folks

Have posted some pics of the last couple of weeks work at Hollygrove.

I'm really pleased with the front cross-member work. In the first batch of photos you can see the bare cross-member which had been blasted. The second batch shows a few shots of the re-built cross-member which has been repaired, coated and fitted with new discs, callipers and bushes.

The "new" transmission will go in this week...it looks to be a good unit, I think it was a previously refurbished unit.

There was a bit of patch and welding work needed on the front chassis where the cross-member attaches, you can see the red paint where this has been done. It's really very satisfying to see the progress made, and realising you are improving the car beyond recognition. At least I'll feel that way until I get the bill!!!

Hope the photos are of interest. I haven't had time to label many, but hopefully most will be self explanatory. Hope they are of interest.

Best Regards

Stuart

Yes keep the photos coming, nowt wrong with photos.
I've already done a complete rear cage rebuild but have the front one to come soon.
I find all pictures of jaguar XJS cars (in various states of dis-assembly) interesting as it helps me with my own total restoration of a 1978 model.

Will do...thanks for the interest.

I was lucky with my front cross-member. There were only a couple of areas of corrosion where it had holed through. Fortunately, these were in areas that could be patched without compromising the structure. The whole assembly looks better than new. They've used the improved poly bushes for the front end as you can see, so the handling should be so much better.

When I first drove this car, it was pretty awful. The steering was downright dangerous and snagged when turning right...so much so you thought the car was going to spin. The steering rack joint was partially seized so that has now been replaced. All the shock absorbers have been replaced...I got boge units. I did wonder about going for something a bit sportier, but this is a weekend road car, so I am more interested in comfort than outright speed and fast cornering. Really surprised just how solid this car is underneath....I took a bit of a risk when buying the car, but have been lucky. Still spending a small fortune on the work, but I think it's money well spent.

Will post more photos over the next week or 2.

Best regards

Stuart

Even though the bodywork on my XJS is far from finished I did sort the rear cage, I also used standard boge units I think as I want to experience this jaguar glide !!!!!!!! that i've been told about (never experienced it as i've never driven a jaguar, I got towed in this when I bought it LOL) . Also discs / pads / bushes / bearings / all locknuts and lock wire where replaced.

Hi Folks

Some more photos of the renovation work. Things starting to go back together now.

The car should be finished this week, just completing the engine service and a few of the interior jobs, plus a refurb of the wheels.

Will post some more when finished.

Best Regards

Hi Stuart.
Been looking at the pictures and noticed your car hasn't got a rear anti-roll bar from body to trailing arms.
Did Jaguar stop fitting them at some point?
or is it just not fitted in the pictures?

Hello

Looking at the history, rear anti-roll bars were fitted to pre-HE cars, but dropped when the HE was introduced. They were then re-introduced after 1987 as a sport pack suspension option?

I did consider having them fitted during the current work, but as my bill has been climbing exponentially (!!!) I couldn't really justify the expense. I don't intend tearing round corners at 100mph...so didn't feel it was an essential addition. Who knows, maybe I'll do it later.

My current work is almost complete...just waiting for the wheels and tyres to be put back on. I've had the lattice wheels renovated and I saw them at the weekend. I'll need to find out who they farmed them out to as the results are astounding, the wheels look brand new....in fact probably better than new, as the finish is very slick.

Will post new pics when I get the car back and give her a polish.
