I don't live so far out of town, but I'm not on a bus route. Consequently my road is a lovely white colour and surprisingly free from any form of friction what-so-ever.

I have an RX-8 as my daily wagon, which entirely fails to cope in snowy weather. Either the TC light is lit and I'm going nowhere, or I turn the TC off, the wheels spin, and I'm going sideways.

My point (yes, yes there is one) is, how does a big heavy V12 cope in these conditions? Anyone been brave enough to try it?

Cheers.

Yes I've been brave enough, however my tyres are slightly wider than standard Toyo's, so maybe not so good for comparison. Anyway the answer is, the handling is terrible. When I'm in the UK its the only car I drive, whatever the weather, so I make the necessary allowances and still enjoy it.

"The handling is terrible"

Hmm, I have to ask, compared to what? A Range Rover, rally car with snow chains, bob-cat?

I've been commuting in my 4.0 litre and it's been OK in the main. I think it handles pretty much like a large rear wheel 2WD car would.

In the current conditions if you are driving on thick packed snow possibly turning to ice I wouldn't expect any different. As you say you do need to make the necessary allowances :? .

Im sure you're right about the comparison with other, heavy rear wheel drive vehicles and my expectations were no different. I was driving on monday 21st Deceember (the first big fall of snow) 5 hours to do a thirty minute drive from Stevenage to Luton and the car was still a nice place to be. The following day I decided to visit Whipsnade zoo on B roads, 1 hour to dig out of the hotel car park, roads a bit slippy but ok. Zoo was closed so I carried on to Browns Lane (not to waste the day). Anyway managed not to get stuck and have nothing but praise for my cars interesting? no, exciting? no, companionable? yeah thats the one, handling. A partner I felt comfortable and secure with. Terrible? that was me talking rubbish

I would have thought the heat from a V12 engine could melt the ice and snow before it like Moses parting the sea

My 3.6 is still off the road, just as well as being white I would never find it again.

Yes the snow melts from the heat of the engine, but returns as ice from the chill from the wallet. Particularly after a fuel stop.

Morning Boys.

As there is nothing doing on the S-type BB today, I thought I`d drop in here to the Clubs most active Forum.

The snow down here near Portsmouth has been enough to bring things to a stand still with roads only just becoming passable yesterday.

It is quite suprising how different cars can be in snow conditions. I had a V8 530 BMW auto with a snow setting. That was quite good. An early 728 on the other hand was quite the most unpredictable car I`ve ever driven on ice.

As to my V8 S-type, this just has to be the best ever on ice and snow. I have 19" rims shod with 245/35/!9 Nexon and Dunlop tyres. The brute ploughs through moderate snow with ease and I`ve never got stuck yet!

That was a bit different to a 320d BMW that took three of us to extract from the yard carpark on Friday. They are of course very light on the back end!

I was worried that I would not be able to get my S out of that same carpark today. Shouldn`t have worried. It just munched it`s way out with a big grin on it`s face!

Keep warm and don`t get stuck in the muck.

Hi Mike, nice to see you.

No problem with the XJS being light on the back end - just take it down the garage and put £100 worth of fuel in it! The tank being handilly located directly over the axle gives a bit more traction.

Unfortunately it leaves you a bit lighter in the wallet.

Hello Tony,

At least there is still one aircraft engineer still trying to go to work!

Yate to Kemble in this weather must be a nightmare.

I`m still frozen solid down here in Fareham. Bit of a thaw on today and we spent a couple of hours extracting cars and attempting to clear pontoons and ramps of snow in the Marina.

I have to say the S in the snow is rather good. The traction control is a small marvel and the overall behaviour of the car is much better than I could ever have imagined. Hill starts cause few problems and the car has never frightened me. I suppose proportions, weight and balance must be ok.

Talk soon.

Mike

Does the S stand for snow type
Best Regards Mark.
