Headlining again....but something current!

Postby stuart27 » Wed Dec 23, 2009 3:51 pm

Hello folks

Like just about every other xjs owner, I'm suffering from droop.....headlining of course. There have been loads of posts on this, but I couldn't see anyone linking to skjagtek. They do a full headlining with biscuit or just the headlining. Cost is 290 pounds for the full pack, which includes some spare material for the posts etc. I think all you'll need is the special adhesive on top of this, which they also sell. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, and I think I'll be going for it. They also do the wood trim packages for the interior, either as full kits or individual parts

I posted the link just in case others hadn't seen this before...apologies if this is already well known

Oh no, that is def the last resort.
At 200 quid to do it myself cost or best part of 300 quid for a pre covered job, I am definately going to stick to my scrap yard reclaimed biscuit job and re trimming it myself.

I think i need to lie down after seeing those figure's i feel faint.

I thought it was quite reasonable, v's what I've seen from some sources.

Remember not everyone has the diy skills necessary to do a good job. Recovering an old base is not an easy thing to do. In my limited experience, the biscuit tends to fall apart when you try and remove, so the already covered new base option is a good one for many I'm sure.

I think this is one of the things that can really make a big difference to the interior of an xjs, so in my view it's money well spent...if you have it of course.

Yes I found them on my search for headlining materials, the replacement headlining panel made from a stronger material is a great idea but as said you have to pay for it.
Has anyone tried to reinforce the original?
How about using fibreglass resin (no matting) would that not soak into the original biscuit and set, making it a lot stronger and also give the spray glue something to stick to?
Matting could be used on the rear to reform broken corners then built up on the face.
I might give this a go when I get to the trimming stage on my rebuild as I have some fibreglass surface matting that is used for final finish on boats/cars (not the structural thick stuff) it's not a lot thicker than paper and when set with resin gives a smooth finish.

You couldn't even get one for christmas unless you lived in a flippin mansion as there's no way poor Santa would get one of those panels down my chimney.

thats exactly what i thought Mr Ian, i reckoned the same that fibreglass resin would soak in nicely.
The main problems with the old digestive biscuit used on the jags is that it
A: crumbles
and
B:if it hasnt disintigrated before your very eyes, is so crumbly and/or powdery the glue has nothing to stick to .

Is it right that the face lifts had a different biscuit?

 I tried several times to repair my droopy HEADLINING ! I sprayed the rear of my backing with fiberglas resin ....it did strengthen it ....but your still left with the inner side ,i found it impossible to strengthen leaving a nice even surface to glue the material to. Any slight defect looks like youve got a soccer ball stuck under the cloth. In the end i gave in and bit the bullet and splashed out on a new kit from gb int trim in loughborough ,who were able to even match the correct head lining colour for my trim code :P All came already covered pre drilled .all i had to do was cover the side rails and rear int light panels , all was fitted in less than a day.....it took longer to reinforce the original backing ......and looks a pro job/finish :D

My point exactly!....sometimes you just need to take the easier (and more sensible) route to get the job done and have it looking good. I've seen a lot of really botched roof lining repairs...all in the name of saving a few hundred quid....seems like a false economy to me.
