cloudy headlight

Postby 1977XJS » Tue Aug 27, 2019 11:08 am

I have a cloudy headlight on my 1977 (R) XJS. Have tried removing it and swilling out with methylated spirits, that works for about 30 seconds, but then slowly clouds over again ? anybody had the same problem ? can these be repaired ? or anybody got a drivers side for sale ?

Why is it cloudy? Residue within the light or something on the outside?
These are glass lenses so not prone to clouding through uv degradation as plastic ones are.

Hi David, The cloudiness is on the inside, we have tried removing the light and swilling out with methylated spirits, that works perfectly, but within a minute or two clouds over again.

I assume you have Fishermas Friend Lozenge headlights? Try a small amount of cellulose thinners, that generally works as a solvent where alcohol based ones won't work. Safe on glass, but not on plastic lenses as used in other Jaguar models.

If still no joy, the lenses can be separated from the silvered backs although this is a last resort.

Thank you Al it worked. If you ever see a bright yellow 1977 XJS, reg BFV702R, at a JEC event, remind the driver he owes you a pie or a pint regards Richard
