Road Marking paint spray on rear bumper

So recently there has been some road works on the A14 and a local road where a new housing estate is being prepared. Cleaning the wheels etc for a show today, I noticed some white paint spots on my rear wing, boot lid, and rear bumper sections. Although I have removed most of the white spots from the paint work, the spots on the rear bumper section wont shift easily without scarring the bumper or leaving a rub mark

Any tips for removing without inflicting any damage?

Sorry to hear this. I think I would try the following order:

- Waterless Wash Spray
- Farecla G3 cutting paste
- 1200 Wet and Dry

Ideally the solvent originally used in the road paint would help. That would revitalise and soften the paint and allow it to be broken up with a solvent soaked rag.

The question is, what is that solvent? You could start with white spirit, acetone. zylene and perhaps go onto a proprietary tar and gum remover sold at most accessory shops. Tar and gum remover shifts all sorts of road type contaminates. Obviously go easy with it initially to ensure it does not attack paintwork.

Will these be okay to use on the bumper surface?

Mine's the black pre-facelift non-painted black bumper.

I have tried pro-shine waterless wash on the bumper before, but this can fade the colour somewhat, especially with intensive rubbing.

most road marking isnt actually ' piant ' its hot plastic , which is why it smells bad when you drive past them doing it

i would try the clay bar first, if really bad try some panel wipe as used for paint prep , you will be surprised at how well that works on most things

and its totally neutral towards all plastics and paint , but will leave it needing a polish , as you will strip away all contanimants on top of the surface

after that is very carefull use of a very sharp knife blade and ' pick ' then off

its how the bodyshops do it

Update:

Clay-bricked twice - did not touch it (but did remove other deposits).

Tried some cutting paste - again, no luck

Ended-up polishing with some black interior polish spray. You can still see the white spots but at least it is less obvious.

Shark knife helped with some spots on the paintwork, but started scarring the bumper so gave up on that!

Have you tried a very sharp chisel used flat? Go easy and paint can be buffed up again.

body-shop top tip

craft knife blade with a couple of wraps of masking tape over the sharp edge on each side of the middle, this will lift it off the paintwork by 0.25mm and will stop the blade actually touching the paint , then drawing the blade over the surface only the masking tape will touch the paint , and the exposed blade will reduce the debris on the surface ,

the scraped down debris will be easier to remove by other methods or solvents etc

Unfortunately these paint marks are quite small; the largest is around 1mm across. My bumpers are the black plastic pre-facelift, so there is no paint on them. Certainly the sharp knife helped remove all the paint spots on the paintwork (rear wing and boot lid) no problem. I'm concerned that solvents will discolour the black plastic further. I think I've already taken some colour out by using some cutting paste.

I found Jizer (or maybe Jizzer) can shift butyl rubber, which is completely different, but it might be worth a try, and anyway it's useful for general engine cleaning.
