Engine numbers

I have a Mk2 which has been fitted with a 4.2ltr engine which is meant to have come from a Series II XJ6. I have letters and numbers stamped on the top side of the oil filter mounting which is where I should find the engine serial number, unfortunately they do not correspond to anything I can find. The code is AQ 765,Jaguar 4.2ltr is cast into the block above this point. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Have you checked the crankcase bellhousing flange on the left side of the engine near the dipstick? On some XK engines, it may be marked there. Mike.
