Rear Caliper Rubber seals

Can somebody tell me if the rubber seals on the rear brake calipers on my S-Type 2.5v6 can be replaced?

My local garage is telling me one is split, but says it cannot be replaced and I have to have a new complete caliper.

Is the garage correct or a) is changing the seal too time consuming so not worth it or b) Is it best to change the caliper anyway?

Any advice here please?

Seals can be replaced, Les. Kits are available.

I believe Oldtimer has done this job and will probably be along here shortly.

We last spoke at the Jaguar day in the new forest at Beauliegh while you were parked next to Mike K.
I'm sorry to hear about your rear brake problem.
I wrote an article on this subject for the magazine which was published in the Dec 2013 issue Vol29 No12. I'm sure one of our learned members will tell us how to resurrect it. I have my copy on my knee. For somebody about to embark on this task for the first time it is well worth the read, even if I say it myself. Like all these jobs it's down to time and cost.

You did not explain the problem you have with the caliper, is it just a split dust cover.

At the time I made enquiries at the local Jaguar Dealer about a seal kit and was told that there was no Part No listed. Would you believe I have a brand new seal kit in front of me and the purchase invoice. The Supplying company is called Brakes International Ltd Moore st Rochdale Tel 01706 666999. Don't ask me wear I dredged that name from I don't have a clue.
The total invoice for two caliper service kits was £21..88. I f you choose to go that route it is important you have your vehicle details at hand .
This task should be within the capabilities of any mechanic worth his salt
Have you any idea of the cost o a service exchange caliper yet?
I have to tell you LES I would be doing the reseal myself and probably new discs and pads as well.

That was clever of you to put that link in. Thanks very much, I don't know how to do that. Any how earlier today I sat and read the article again myself. I have to say it was jolly hard going.
Les, I cannot recall if your vehicle has the electric park brake or a good old fashion lever. I would put money on both types of caliper being the same. The only difference being that the cables are pulled manually to apply the manual park brake ,whereas a winch driven by an electric motor pulls the cables to apply the park brake on the electric park brake.

So thinking out loud I reckon it is a strip out job thoroughly clean re-seal and reassemble as per the article. Do not attempt to open up the cassette with the big spring inside you will never get it together again.
IT would be worth examining the two rear brake hoses.

That magazine link was awesome. This post is probably to late now but anyone doing this kind of job would be well advised to do one side at a time so that you have always got a reference point if anything goes wrong.

I`ve two X350R brake articles that will be published shortly. One was supposed to appear in the last mag but Nigel ran out of copy space. Part one, front, hopefully in the next mag with Part two, rear, in the mag after that. Part two includes EPB proceedure for reline, switch off and calibrate before recommissioning. Hi Oldtimer I haven't had the problem fortunately with my car but I have done a lot of work on all sorts of cars as I am a time served mechanic.
I have found that it is always best to do one side at a time, more so with drum brakes because of the springs and clips ect, if one goes ping across the garage and you you didn't see where it was attached to you've got the other side as a reference.
