Earliest XJ40 V12 ?? Production/launch info

ok here we go, this info is 100% correct, I cannot divulge the source and have only published some of what I have been given

V12 intro at 674582 is WRONG!!

the first V12 XJ40 to production standard was vin 673299, which was despatched 18/01/1993, production started in Oct 1992, the car in question 674413 was despatched on 02/02/93 and is 175 cars after intro at 673229. It is a Jaguar Cars car, but the role is unknown, and is too far down the line to be a pre production car. However there is an outstanding recall on the car which has never been attended too!!, probably too late to worry now

There are also 44 cars BEFORE vin 673299, these will be the pre pro cars

all proto's were built April 1991 to June 1992, most with 5.3 engines

it probably doesnt warrant restoring then, it needs lots of work, if it turned out to have a significant/interesting past it may of justified a restoration. For now i will try and get it running then put it away in the dry and decide its fate at a later date.

I collected the V12 today and its very rotten underneath and around the sunroof, damp inside, due to the amount of work it needs and the fact its not a pre production car as i had hoped, it will be broken for spares, the engine will be kept for a future project.

It is a shame but the amount of work needed makes it non viable, if it were a significant car as i had hoped, i would have one day restored it, unfortunately its not so i will save the engine for a future project (possibly 6.0 manual series 1 xj) and break the rest.

If you're keeping the engine, then keep all of the ancilliaries which are peculiar to the engine. For example the engine ecu is specific to XJ40 6 litre cars, so make sure you keep that!

in fact bear in mind, LOTS of 6.0 XJ40 stuff is unique, essentially everything forward of the screen is unique, except the shell, wings, bonnet, bumper and lights. Brakes, subframe, oil cooler, air con, the lot, its all bespoke stuff

I think its a bit past it as far as being put back on the road, worth more in bits id say, inner, outer sills, edge of floor all rotten due to water ingress while parked up since 2006, if it had been a signifiant car i would of been prepared to restore it.

Just for info really. There are a couple of labels on the underside stating Development Assembly and a date of Dec 1992.

nope standard dash, and believe it or not all XJ40 dash's have "development assembly" stuck on the back!!
