Chassis Plate

I have a 1961 Mk2 (3.4) which was restrored prior to me buying and I'm undertaking some detailing work. Can anyone assist with the location of the chassis plate or identification plate.In the book 'original jaguar,' I notice a plate on the buklhead between the battery and the heater. Is that where such a plate should be?

Hello Neil,

the main plate is riveted on the nearside inner wing (L. H.). I'm not aware of one on the bulkhead as you mention?

Mine is a 1961 3.8 MkII and the plate is on the inner wing in the engine bay between the heater and the fuse box, upside down so it can be read as you lean over the wing.

I'm having similar difficulty to Neil. I wonder if these plates were fitted to different places dependent on specification?
The Jaguar service manual clearly shows it fitted to the offside inner wing level with the radiator top hose, about where the brake fluid reservoir is located. Nigel Thorley's 'Original Jaguar' shows it in this location on page 57, whilst it is under the starter solenoid on p 58/59 but not on the following page!
Paul Skilleter's 'Jaguar Mk2 Saloons Super Profile' shows the plate under the starter solenoid on p43 and 46, while it appears to be on the nearside inner wing on p53, approximately where the power steering reservoir would be located for cars fitted with PAS.
Again, in Nigel Thorley's 'Jaguar Mark 1&2' (Haynes) the plate is under the starter solenoid in the 340 model on p153 but not in the 240 on p146 or in the 3.8L on p81.

On the S type the plate is between the battery and heater.

As far as I know Mk2s up to 1963 had the plates on the inside of the nearside wing after that year they were on the bulkhead

You could just look for the set of four holes left where the rivets were removed when the chassis plate was taken off. I'm doing a rebuild at the moment and I didn't have a chassis plate, but there's clearly four holes on the inner wing, exactly matching the chassis plate holes. So that's where I'm going to fix the new one.
