Door dropping...new hinge?

Postby greensimonc » Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:34 pm

Hi all,

I've noticed that the drivers door on my S1 2+2 has dropped a bit, so I've just had the door card off in the hope that a couple of bolts needed tightening.....of course that isn't the case! There's a "pin" that runs vertically between the part of the hinge that is bolted to the door and the part bolted to the bulkhead and it's there that there is play.

I don't know if it's possible to replace the pin, or if it means a complete new hinge, but thought I'd ask the assembled experts before helping SNG B increase their profits!

Any advice welcome! Cheers, Simon.

Hi I have a 1969 2+2 and many years ago now I overhauled my hinges. If they are not to badly worn they can be opened up and a larger pin fitted. I was lucky enough to have an engineering machine shop so did them myself. Be aware that the doors are extremely heavy and fit very close to the wing. Its a two person job to remove and refit. Try getting a cost for new hinges to compare with repairing them. If an oversize pin is used I think I used silver steel but a good grade steel is okay. Cheers John.

If you go online and put in NewHill Garage Article 9 it shows you how to refurbish a hinge. Cheers John.

Thanks John, I'll do the research and comparison! Will update in due course.
