Exhaust Tips XK8

Newbie here... can anyone tell me what the exhaust tips on the XK8 should look like? I mean. are they polished, chromed, black chrome or just plain steel

My new acquisition seems to have blackish/metal, maybe corroded stainless tips... before I attempt to clean them up it would be handy to know what they should look like !

If they are too far gone, are there replacements available anywhere?

The standard exhaust trims are stainless. Usually, they polish up well with some elbow grease. if they don't, there are plenty of standard, Jaguar optional and non OE versions available on ebay and from advertisers in the magazine. Mike.

I use a Scotchbrite dish cleaner and some white spirit. That dissolves the oily combustion deposits without scratching the stainless.

Wear rubber gloves. It can be a filthy job!

Well here was this afternoons job, get the exhaust tips cleaned.

Used a combination of Solvol Autosol, Bark Keeps Friend and stainless steel wool !!
These have never been cleaned for a long time..

Before, left back





and after, the corrosion has set in right on the end so this is the best they will ever be.. regular cleaning may help!

They look good to me. As you say, the trick is to keep them moderately clean and then it's a much easier task to get that bright finish back for special occasions and the concours look. Mike.

regular cleaning will also stop the deposits building up so much again as well

its surprising how making these small details right helps your car look so much better than your average car

Is the standard exhaust on a X100 stainless or normal steel.

Mild steel is magnetic - good stainless is not. Some exhaust bits are made of bright iron which is low grade stainless and some magnetic attraction can be felt.
