Is there anybody that remembers seeing an artical about a catch tank that somebody had made to catch the oil that leaked from their rear crank seal?
I had my engine rebuilt by VSE (nightmare) and I still have a leaking rear seal, having spent £8500 on various items, engine, gearbox etc I cannot afford an engine out job again. I know this will be seen as bodge but it worked, there was a plug in it so it could drained now and then.

I made a sort of tray to catch the oil and it wasn't really successful to be honest and wouldn't bother with it again.
My advice is this and it depends on how handy you are with cars.
Talk to Rob Beere racing they will do a rear lip seal conversion for you for around £600 if you actually talk to them. If you can lift your E up then you can remove everything you need to from the bottom without taking the engine out but you will need to remove the reaction plate. The oil pan will drop off easily and you can then remove the crank. They will do a service exchange which means you won't be hanging around waiting for yours to be done.
Might be a bit more hassle than you bargained for but well worth it in the end.
Having spoken to various people who have had their engines rebuilt by so called 'experts' they have experienced trouble. Why not speak to Rob and Carl at Rob Beere racing and tell them what you want, they are not as expensive as you might think and I know they do a first class job, they have been building engines for over 30 years are both Jaguar trained and have a wealth of knowledge and it will be done right.
For £8500 they would have built a stage 1 engine for you.
My engine only goes to them no where else.

As I understand it the engine is back in the car. That being the case I don't think a crank removal is possible without lots of work which would be less if the engine/gearbox were removed. Front covers, chains clutch, flywheel gearbox, or am I missing something?

I bought one of these trays, its just a little sump with a drain plug that is simply bolted to the bellhousing. A guy had a batch made about May 2007. I have his details.
I was lucky, with useage my car had actually stopped dripping by the time the tray arrived. I think it cost about £115. If you want my tray I'm not going to ask you that much for it. It sounds like youve had enough bad luck.

I just want to thank you for the catch tray, I have just returned from the JEC trip to Ireland, after 1400 mls no oil on my garage floor, not a drop !!
To anbody out there that wants a quick and cheap fix to leaky rear crank seals, track down one of these catch trays, it may be seen as a bodge by some but a lot a cheaper than taking the engine out.
Maybe in a couple of years time I will have the lip seal fitted but unto then I am happy with this simple and affective addition to my car

Sounds just what i need – I find friends are delighted when I first turn up in the E-type, but when they see the oil drips after I've left they're never that keen for me to bring it back again. The advantage is it keeps the car's underside pretty well rust-proofed.
Do you have a picture you can post on here to help me hunt one down or maybe fabricate one?
