Cylinder head studs

why of why do the head studs go through the colling jacket to the bottom of the block - whatever posessed the changed from the earlier engines.

What I cant understand is that there does not seem to be any way of sealing the water jacket to the head where the head studs go, you can actually get water from the water jacket up the head stud bolt holes and could come out of the top where the domed nuts are.

Any information on this would be appreciated.

If just stripped mine down to check engine condition which thankfully is fantastic though still have to get to bottom end but oil pressure was OK so not suspecting anything. Will be renwwing the long bolts not the front / rear short ones.
