New Engines ?
Hi Dave,
This VIN data has proved really useful for me in my search for an XJR.
However, any idea how we can check the build of a replacement engine.
I've found a car that had its engine replaced after 60K miles but with what ?. Another Nikasil engine or a standard one. Who knows ?.
Is there a register we can interrogate which lists Nikasil engines against steel lined engines ?.
Thanks

engines were usually replaced with another Nikasil engine,
later, when it was recognised that it was the Nikasil that was failing, Jaguar outsourced the faulty engines to have a steel liner installed, these were then used for exchange, and fitted by Jaguar........
a replacement engine will carry a yellow tag mounted under the throttle body, this can be seen in situ looking from above in the engine bay
the engine number ( which has nothing to o with the VIN ) can be broken down into the day and time of production, the code is easily found on the forums

New Engine ?
Thanks BB,
I'm trying to get the new engine number asap.
I know I'm being a bit lazy asking this, but where are the engine codes stored in the BB ?.
I also read your comment about Nikasil pressure tests and I agree there isn't a simple black and white figure.
The whole problem can only be described as various shades of grey from pure white to black; white being good of course and black; bad.
However, with so much opinion out there, it is difficult for a newcomer like me to distinguish between the good and the bad.
That's why newcomer's rely upon the views of experienced members like yourself and David Marks, without whom we would probably make a disasterous financial mistake.
So thanks for all your help and advice. It is very much appreciated.
