worn tyres

had a blow out in my xkr just before x mas ( f/o/s/) comming off the motorway slip road, only doing about 60 so not too bad !

when i went for another tyre, i found that it had worn to the cord on the inside edge, and the f/n/s/ tyre was worn as well, nearly down to the cord,again, right on the inner edge.

The rest of the tyre had plenty of tread on, about 7 mm. i had the tracking checked which was ok, so now i presume the it must be the caster/camber thats out, unless anyone else has other ideas.

i've not had time to get it checked out yet. i've only had the car a couple of weeks, and to be honest didnt notice the inside tyre wear, I wish I had, it might have saved me a few quid !

Your tyre wear seems excessive though it can be a problem. The front wheel bearings and upper wishbone bushes are prone to wear, suggest you check these out or get a Jag garage to check them. Cheers, Roy G.

I agree with Roy, the most likely culprits are the top wishbone bushes but don't forget to check the ball joints as well as the wheel bearings. Mike.

thanks for that, will get them checked when I have it serviced. would there be any other symptoms of the bushes being worn?

Dependent upon the extent of the wear, other symptoms might be tramlining on white lines or motorway grooves, less than precise handling when cornering and knocking noises. Mike.

well I've just had the car serviced at a local specialist, at a cost of £180, as opposed to the £500 the main dealers wanted.
front suspension checked out and all ok, he did say that the top wishbone bushes had been replaced, as well as the control arms.
I can only assume that the excess tyre wear happened before the bushes were replaced.
next step is to contact the previous owner to see if they can shed any further light on the matter. At least it puts my mind at rest, and hopefully the front tyres will last a bit longer this time.

I wonder why the control arms were replaced? has the car had a shunt?.
A couple of years ago I changed all the bearings and bushes on my XK8 front end, realigning everything took a while. Not just the usual front end toe out/in but aligned front and back axles and camber too, cost me a tenner at the tyre centre, the car handles better and tyres are wearing evenly. Measure the tread and check the tyres after a couple of thousand miles if it is worn on the inside get it tracked again.
