What a wonderful article in the April Mag about the restoration of the Lister, a venerable name whose products deserve veneration, but just how far is sensible? Great that there are such people prepared to spend such enormous amounts on putting back together such a mechanical puzzle, and I hope we will have a chance to see and appreciate the finished result. I hope Brian Lister himself is to be involved as only he can probably answer such questions such as where the special cylinder heads came from, but the bottom line must be that the cost of this project would put the owner well up the queue for the new Mclaren or Ferrari.

Each to his own, and as I said, let's raise a glass to such benefactors of mechanical history.

By the way, what do you think of the 'buttress-less' back end?

That particular cars is (or was) owned by one of our BB members.

Passion for our cars is a very personal thing isn't it? I suspect that none of us will ever see back the total amount of money that we spend on our XJSs be that an early HE Coupe or a Lister.

The price of a twin-turbo 7 litre Lister Le Mans XJS convertible when new was close to £200,000! A phenomenal amount of money even now and an astronomical amount of money in the early 1990s. Yet it was probably the only way to buy a car that could reportedly do 200mph.

There are two low-mileage manual 7 litre Listers on the market at the moment - a normally aspirated one at about £35k and a twin turbo at £30k. I hope to be doing an article with the new owner on the twin-turbo soon.

I'd love to have the money to buy or retore what is argably the ultimate XJS. But I suspect that even I if I had that amount, I would probably fritter it away on an Aston Martin Vantage, a Riley Pathfinder, a Mini Moke, an Austin A35 and a Series 1 Land Rover.

Perhaps we all suffer from the same lunacy, the depths of our individual pockets being the only thing that distinguishes us? Long may the irrational love of cars linger in all of us!

Haha I thought you were going to say ...an Aston Martin Vantage, a Riley Pathfinder, a Mini Moke, an Austin A35 OR a Series 1 Land Rover. It'd be a heck of a Mini Moke for the price of Lister XJ-S!

Seriuosly though - I'm a butress man as well - so much so that I had the chance to buy a low mileage 3.6 manual XJ-S Convertible for less than I ended up spending on my coupe and couldn't do it as there were no butresses.

Fortunately there are such loonies to keep these mechanical rarities going. I look forwards to seeing it at an XJS meet soon.

Classic car indeed any car ownership is not about saving or making money but always about spending it and enjoying the result.

Liked the article and the car, apart from the fastback? design at the back.
Yuk they have ruined one of the great features of the car.
