Oil leak - auxilary drive

Postby poprivet » Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:53 pm

I've been chasing an oil leak for a while now. While I had the front suspension off last summer, it was the ideal opportunity to clean up of all the engine parts that normally are out of reach to have a better look and I discovered two leaks. A minor one from the front R/H corner of the head gasket, no surprise there, a common place on 3.6 engines. The other, major one is the paper gasket between the power steering pump and the timing chain case. Bits of the old gasket had fallen out, brittle, crisp and well gone. I tightened up the housing and hoped for the best, but it obviously didn't like this intrusion into it's 21 years of sleeping and has repayed me with an even larger leak, one I cannot now ignore.

So, the good news is the gasket is in stock and even with VAT is only 17p.

The bad news, is in order to replace it, the distributor, primary timing cover and chain has to come off. That obviously means removing the radiator (which has already put me in hospital once this year), belts, crank pulley and crank seal, and means obtaining a cam-timing tool (sold, but not hired out by the club) and lord knows what else.

Also it seems sensible to me that while all that lot is out that I replace the head gasket at the same time, as to my knowledge it has never been replaced in its entire life. As the head would be off, obviously the valves would need a re-grind and de-coke. I expect the cam-chain and followers should also be replaced and maybe head bolts, opinions differ on that one.

Somehow, I don't think my XJS is likely to be back on the road for some time as I'm not expecting to start any work on it this side of winter. I do love this car, but sometimes I wonder if I should take up a different hobby.

Oil leak - auxilary drive

Hi Pop

I guess you don't have a garage/workshop area where you can lay the car up and take it step by step over the winter?

I think in that case i would learn to live with the leak! :(

How about bodging it and covering the outside of the casing with epoxy glue or fibreglass resin.
That would stop the bugger leaking out!
Bodge it and scarper.

Oil leak - auxilary drive

I spent the weekend pacing up and down studying all the manuals and reasoned that as the timing chain and front bearing were in place, the rear housing should come away leaving the shaft hanging. If I was wrong and the shaft moved I would be in the deep stuff, but if I was right it would be a relatively easy fix.

I was correct and so after a struggle the housing is off :D Access wasn't easy, but with the power steering pump eventually out of the way all went well. The bearing in the housing has an oil feed to it and the rear portion dumps through a drain hole right in the area where the gasket is only a few millimetres wide. No wonder that there was so much oil leaking. The picture below shows the layout. I've ordered a new gasket and shaft oil seal so depending upon when postman pat decides to get of his ar$e and go back to work it should all go back together without too much trouble.

Finally got it all back together. I also cleaned out the petrol sump tank and filter so as it hadn't run for 6 months or so I couldn't resist running it up, it started 2nd attempt, here's the evidence:

Apologies for poor sound quality, I used the video setting on my compact camera.
