ABS Light

Postby nelson1952 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 12:14 pm

Hello all.
I own a 1995 4.0 Celebration. This morning on a short return journey home I noticed the ABS warning light was illuminated, as I didnt have far to go and the car was otherwise driving normally I carried on home.

Upon arriving I stopped the engine then turned the ignition back on, the ABS light duly lit up and then went out as it should. When I restarted the engine the ABS light remained off.

When I turned the engine off for the last time I happened to press the footbrake, this resulted in a loud tap from somewhere behind the dash, not unlike the flaps on the facial air vents closing. Each time the brake pedal was pressed the noise could be heard. I have never heard such a noise before.

Any ideas as to what may be causing these two events will be much appreciated. :?

ABS Light

Just a couple of suggestions,

The ABS light may well be caused by a purious signal from one of the sensors. I've had this happen a couple of times over the last few years. As with many cars, the sensors need to be only slightly out of alignment to cause problems. If the problem doesn't come back, I would ignore it (personal suggestion, not an official recommendation!). You could check that each sensor is properly seated into the hub.

The click from the brake pedal might be the interlock circuit being slightly noisy (the circuit that stops you moving the gear selector without your foot on the brake). Is it now happening all the time?

I'm only down the road in West Malling. Give me a shout if you want to pop down and have a look at the problem. Not sure if I can help but happy to try!

If you can persuade the light to stay on next time you are driving and it comes on, the diagnostic process was discussed here:

Even if it goes away again, it may give a clue as to which sensor/connection is having a problem. Then you can take Paul up on his offer of help and clean and remake the joint :-)
