Growler Fog Light Covers - 3D Printing?

Postby PJAB » Wed Sep 20, 2023 9:40 am

Hi

I am still in my first year of XJ-S ownership. I am getting towards the end of my list of mechanical projects that need to be done to make sure that my beloved car is in tip top condition and that me using it whenever I want is merely adding miles to it and not damaging it.

My attention is now turning towards functionality projects - i.e. making sure that all the equipment on it that should work does work as intended. My final project - maybe in a years time - will be cosmetic projects.

Anyway, within the functionality projects one of the jobs is to reattach the front fog lights. The car came with them attached but they did not work. As they had no plastic protective covers I felt that as they didn’t work, all that would happen if I left them attached is that teh lenses would eventually be cracked by stones etc. thrown up from the road.

However, I want to get the fog lights working again and reattached - they were original equipment on the car I believe and I think they look cool in a period kind of way. I have spent the last year casually looking for replacement fog light covers - but with no joy. I believe that they are a well known item in short supply.

This morning I had the idea of investigating whether any new ones could be manufactured by 3D printing. Does anyone know if this has been investigated before - if there is a show stopper that I’m unaware of then I should have another think - but equally if someone has started investigating this and come to a halt due to time constraints etc. then maybe I could pick that project up.

If this idea does get traction - might any other forum users be interested in buying some 3D printed fog light covers?

As ever, thanks for your interest in reading this post and possibly contributing to it.

Peter,

As you're aware, the price of good used foglights & foglight covers seems to have reached quite ridiculous levels.

I've picked up a few new and used lights and covers over the years and one day I might even get around to selling them on!

Despite the fact that your project might lower the value of the ones I have(!) , if you do get your project off the ground, I'd be prepared to lend you a new pair of covers to use as templates to scan for 3d printing.

Cheers

Paul

Perfect - thanks - I may well take you up on that offer if this idea gains traction.

All the best

I have a pair of what I think may be original growler covers. The fog lights are corroded so was looking at how to refurbish them - was thinking of using fibreglass and then painting them all black . Time has passed and I now think I will fit modern LED lights to the recesses in the front spoiler for a more modern look, so will be happy to sell the covers.
