Brake pad warning light

The brake pad warning light came on today on my 2013 2.2 ltr Sportbrake.

Out of curiosity I plugged the code reader in and got C004A-15. A quick (!) scan of the 12,000+ page Service and Repair Manual says:

'Brake Lining Wear Sensor - Circuit short to battery or open'

It goes on to suggest checking for a wiring fault. Nowhere is there any mention of worn pads, which at 43,000 miles seems quite likely and was indeed mentioned at the last service as likely to come up soon.

Anyone know if the above fault code is generated because the wear sensor has been activated or does it imply a separate fault? And does it give a clue to whether the front or rear sensor has generated the problem?

Once the weather picks up I'll have to have a look and decide whether to just replace the pads myself or, if discs need replacing as well, to turn it over to the pros.
