does my 92 4L AJ6 engine, have a timing belt or chain, and will it need replacing,or do they really last forever
Re: timing belt
Hi - your car has a timing chain and not a belt. Changing it is not a routine maintenance job like a belt would be.
Having said that, it is known for the timing chains to stretch and throw the valve timing out and the tensioners can get a bit noisy.

Re: timing belt
I actually had a chain snap on my 92 AJ6 (not a pleasant sight).

Re: timing belt
AFAIR on the 4.2 XK engine the guidance was if you ever take the camshaft timing apart, replace the chain as it's so cheap.
