Insurance

I have been with Footman James for a couple of years now but decided this year to try and get a deal with another company that are recommended by JEC. I got quotes from Peter James and Adrian Flux and decided to go ahead with a very good low price from Adrian Flux. All is well and good apart from getting an easy process for a car valuation. They require 7 recent specific photographs and all receipts for work carried out to be sent by hard copy or the internet. This is quite time consuming as I have an enormous amount of receipts to photograph and download. As they did not accept older photographs of the car, I had to wait for a decent day to get my car out of the garage (this is not straight forward with my garage) so that I could get the specific viewing angles of the car they require. With Footman James they issued a valuation certificate without all process, so i might go back to them if this is not sorted out in the next day or so.
Re: Insurance
Generally to get an agreed valuation on an older car the photos you state are required. I have found that receipts are only required if you get professional help but DIY then the pictures tell the story. Maintenance issues do not require receipts to be provided but things like a rewire, new headlining, new chrome etc which does add value generally does I have found. It all helps actually if you have to make a claim as you then have advised the insurer whereas if you haven't advised them of work done they may argue valuations. You can of course get the club to look at the car and offer a valuation which insurers tend to accept.

Re: Insurance
Thanks for the reply. They state they would not accept a club valuation, but anyway I have had my valuation accepted. As with many restorations the car owes me more money than what it is probably worth, but I have the satisfaction of knowing the car has no hidden issues. My car is a 1983 XJ-SC 3.6 manual and I do spend time looking at similar ones that are for sale, so that I can get a feel for what mine is worth. The car owes me £20k and I know that trying to get a valuation for that amount would be difficult so I aimed at £14k. I know there are few cheaper ones about but you can almost bet that there would be some big issues to sort out. Each year I think shall I sell it, but then I step back and think do I want to start again when I know the condition of every nut and bolt and have a car that I love to drive.
Anyway now that I have been through this valuation process I will know what to expect next time.
Best regards

I know that feeling. Sounds a nice car. Glad you got it insured.

Re: Insurance
cabriolet,
Can I just clarify, are you saying that Adrian Flux, who one of the panel of JEC Insurance brokers, would not accept a JEC valuation for your car?
That's really concerning as I am just about to sort out my agreed valuation with AF.
Have you raised this with the club management?
Tks

Re: Insurance
Adrian Flux have never taken Club valuations as far as I am aware.
They are special; much better that you do all the work and then the secretary decides.

Re: Insurance
This is my car and I am just now glad the valuation is sorted and received a good price for renewal.

They state that you can send an enthusiast club valuation in to aid their decision but it does not automatically follow that they would honour it.

Re: Insurance
Ah, that clarifies things!
I had previously sent a letter from Graham Searle, who knows my cars well, to AF on one of my cars, together with a set of photos etc and they had set it up on that basis.
I was just concerned that they had changed their process.
