driver door window drop fault

Hi guys,
i have a 1999 xk8 coupe with driver door window fault. Window will drop when door handle lifted but only half what it should. On closing the door the glass will not seat properly in frame although the glass goes up. New battery fitted and glass cycled to reset top and bottom positions.
Any ideas folks?

This sounds to me as though you might need to go through the full door glass adjustment process. This is a physical realignment of the glass in the door, relative to the operating mechanism rather than an electrical reset and requires the door card to be removed and a step-by-step routine to be followed that is detailed in the workshop manual, with pictures - too long to reproduce here!

The manual is available on line, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to pass details of how to get as we're usually talking about pirated copies!!

Hi,
I have an early 1997 convertible,and suffer from the dreaded drivers window issue ! Occasionally the window works fine,then stalls within a day.
The passenger window works fine,at the moment When the window is switched, there is a clear single Clicking sound, but no action.
Sometimes when the doors is opened the widow goes down,as it should. But when you close the door it does not go up again. You open the door again,and the window goes down further. And so on.
When you switch the window to come up, there is no action,but if i gently pull the window up,it rises back into position,very slowly.
Could the problem be, the window module unit ?
Is there a test ?
Will it come up with an appropriate fault code ? Will try that next.
Frustrating with Barrier Car Parks !!
Looks bad when you have to get out of a Jaguar to operate the barrier, to get a ticket .
Besides that VERY small issue,What a car . 153,000 miles and she still purrs like a kitten.

Mike, you're clearly aware that this problem is not uncommon, but you don't mention if you're aware of what the usual cause is and whether or not you've therefore checked the condition of the battery and reset the windows as per my earlier post in this thread. A good battery is a fundamental requirement of a reliable XK8/R and also to allow reliable fault finding.

I would suggest that to be assessed as a 'good/acceptable', the battery installed in the car should have a minimum voltage of 12.45 after being left for at least a 24 hour period from last charging or the engine running. That period of waiting is to remove the surface charge from the battery plates, but if you don't want to wait, then with the engine stopped, switch on the full beam headlights for 5 minutes, then wait 10 minutes before checking the voltage. (Those are Jaguar's basic battery guidelines)
Once the battery is proved good, it may be necessary to reset the window memory. My handbook describes it:

Re-programming door windows after power disconnection.

After battery disconnection or fuse removal, the system must ‘re-learn’ the limits of window travel. This is to ensure correct operation of the automatic window drop facilities. Re-programming is done with the doors closed and the ignition switch in position ‘I’ or ‘II’, as follows:

1. Press and hold the lower part of the switch. When the window is fully lowered, continue to hold the switch for 5 seconds.
2. Press and hold the upper part of the switch. When the window is fully raised continue to hold the switch for 5 seconds.
Carry out this procedure for driver and passenger door windows.

Unfortunately for you, Fault Codes for the windows were not introduced until arrival of the 4.2 models in 2002/3, so you won't get any help there if it's more than a battery problem. It is possible that the window module is at fault; that module is an integral part of the relevant door control module and I'm not aware of any simple tests, but hopefully a good battery will negate the need to go there!

Another thought is that it could be a problem with the window channels that the glass runs in or something amiss with the gearing and linkages between motor and glass, but start with the battery.
