Stuck in first gear

A few times now y 2004 2.5l has shown a 'Gearbox Fault' warning and seemed to be stuck in first (4000 rpm giving less that 30 kph). Switching off and on cured it. My local specialist scanned it and reported a failure to change from 1st to 2nd, rather than 3rd gear limp home mode. In the past it seems to have got stuck and then changed up with a bit of a surge and continued normally.

Looking through the forum it appears that an oil change and reflash might be the first thing to try; does this particular fault suggest any other course of action, please?

Normally no 1 suspect would be the Battery, however as you have not reported any other warning lights/messages like ABS/DSC not available then I would concur with your thoughts about Gearbox service and reflash, especially if mileage is over 50/60k.

Agree fully with Doug.

An oil service and ECU reflash can transform a gearbox.

Thankyou, gents I'll try the oil change and re-flash. Mileage is 130,000 kms, but the battery is showing green in its condition window (and there are no other electrical gremlins to report). I appreciate the help
