Hi there,
I’m rebuilding the front suspension of my 1965 3.8 automatic S type, fitted with power steering.
The intermediate steering column is fitted with a type of Hookes joint, which is able to slide in/ out via a pair of nylon rollers.
The rollers had worn, allowing a fair amount of “slop” in the steering.
I have obtained new rollers, and my main question is what type of grease should this joint be filled with?
Also, just for my own interest, is this sliding joint fitted only to cars with Power Steering, as it doesn’t appear to be fitted to all S types of this era.
Thanks in advance, Richard

My 1963/4 Daimler V8 has said nylon rollers at the intermediate joint. I have no clue what grease is used!

Re: Suitable grease for sliding joint
Thank you for your reply.
I’m still puzzled by the use of the “sliding joint”, unless it was in preparation for an adjustable steering column. My column is most definitely not adjustable, and is kept in place by a “tab” which prevents any fore & aft movement.

Any chance of a picture as I am finding it hard to visualise where this is.

Re: Suitable grease for sliding joint
The joint's a bit like a CV joint, in that it can accept some 'plunge'.
Probably to accommodate movement of the cross beam (and inaccuracies during build...)
I used ordinary multi purpose grease when I rebuilt mine aeons ago, has been fine ever since
