OBDII Code Reader for 1996 XK8

Postby jwpalfrey » Mon Jul 01, 2019 10:22 am

Morning all,

I've got an engine fault with EML light on, it currently goes off when switched off and switched back on but returns upon startup after a few miles. I think it's throttle body related as it cuts out for a second or two while driving.

Anyway I've tried some cheap OBDII readers but I've got nothing from them as they don't seem to connect to the car. They work fine on the few VAG products I've used them on, one of them even asks for manufacturer name but still fails to connect.

Firstly does the engine need to be running? I'm 99% sure not, just ignition on but I could be wrong.

And lastly can anyone recommend a OBDII reader that will work with my 1996 XK8?

Thanks

Usually you just need the ignition on for the code reader to read codes etc.

I successfully use an Ancel AD310 on my 2001 XK8, but that doesn't mean it will work on your 1996 model. Where are you based? Someone local may have a code reader they could try on your car.

Thanks, I found a youtube video (Secrets of the XK8) in which the chap (John) has an almost identical car to mine and showed how to use a fault code reader, I simply ordered the same on:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013DSTPWY? ... E_DDE_dt_1

£14 off Amazon, and it is the simpliest of readers I've ever used, but it worked! Only for the engine but for £14 I am not complaining at all.

P0335 - Crankshaft Sensor, I'll be calling up a dealership this morning to see what the damage is. Being a 97MY I think it's a hard wired sensor @ £86+VAT

Hi. Just tagging onto this thread. I've just had an email from Aldi and they now have an OBD11 code reader for £16.99. They say it's for 1996 models onwards. Has anyone tried these?
