Help! 2006 S-Type R STR Power Steering Pump Replacement Options

Postby Elwabbo » Sat Jun 23, 2018 3:35 pm

Hi All,
Apologies in advance if any of this has been covered elsewhere, but I haven't found it if it is :(
I am in the middle of changing all of the coolant hoses on my 06 STR and I have a couple of 'oil' leaks, which I am trying to fix while I've got access. Upon inspection I think the steering pump may be failing. The PAS pump pulley was caked in oil and muck on both sides and there were traces of muck and oil on the inner wing panel/box section adjacent to the pump presumably from where oil had been thrown off as the pulley rotated. Additionally the pump feed tube from the tank looks pretty damp with what looked like fresh/clean fluid leaking where it joins the pump at the 90deg elbow.

I've contacted Jaguar and the tank to pump hose is on back order and wont be available until the end of August, so in the meantime I slide the hose clip forward towards the pump and fitted a second hose clip behind it.
Now, I suppose its possible that the leaked 'oil' visible on the pulley etc came from the pump inlet tube but I wouldn't think the 'oil' would spread forward, so I suspect that the pump pulley shaft seal is leaking. To give you an idea of how much fluid I am talking about, when I bought the car nearly 2 years ago the steering fluid tank was about 1cm low and, after topping up, it has fallen by the same amount over the time I've had the car. So the PAS system has lost 2cm of fluid over 2+ years (so probably only around 50-100ml). The car has been off the road since Nov last year but when I was moving it to start the hose job, I noticed there was an unusual and relatively loud 'whir' noise coming from the pump when I turned the wheel to the left and the noise was continuous on left full lock. Lastly, I am no expert, but the steering fluid in the tank looks a little darker than I remember, and it smells a little 'burnt' to me. So I figure the pump is failing. Can anyone say if this sounds likely given my description?

So my main question is, where can I get a pump from? I've looked online and SNG Barrett have a few pumps, most of which are very expensive. I've found it difficult to try and find which is the correct pump on their site. I've got a Jag parts catalogue for 2000-2005 cars (cant remember where its from) and it states the pump for V8 cars is XR8028121. The SNG Barrett catalogue states the part number XR855717. In any case, I am struggling to find a reasonably priced replacement, and to buy it from Jaguar will cost more than £500 I think. I would be happy with a good quality re-manufactured pump, but I cant even find one of those. I've looked on EBay US and found a couple that I think might do the job but they quote different part numbers. I've heard the late STR pumps are the same as used on V8 Ford Lincolns, but so far that isn't helping me either. I figure a remanufactured pump will end up costing me £250 from the US, even if I can find one, so maybe I could get the existing pump rebuilt for less than that. I don't really fancy fitting a second hand one, unless its a really good one.
Has anyone been through this already?
Can anyone point me in the direction of where to get a pump?
Or does anyone have experience of having a pump repaired by a specialist?
Does anyone know if the 4.2 STR pump is the same as those used on the 4.2 XK/XKR or XJ/XJR?
Would this one fit https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cardone-Indust ... #vi-ilComp ?

Once I get a pump I will then have the problem of fitting it. I understand the engine has to be lifted to gain access to the bolts. I could probably buy or rent an engine hoist to do this, but are the Jaguar lifting brackets really necessary, and if so, does anyone know where could I get them? Or does anyone have an alternative to the bracket or a safe alternative method for lifting the engine?

Cheers
Steven

Hi All,
An update...but I am more confused than ever!
As I have removed the radiator, and as I had to disconnect the transmission cooler lines to do so, I noticed that the rubber flexi's were freely rotating on the aluminium tubes at the crimp point. The crimps sit right in front of the steering pump. So I am left wondering if there is nothing wrong with the steering pump and actually the oil on/around the pump came from from leaky tranny hoses. I got the auto gearbox serviced last year at a specialist (Mackies in Glasgow) and the mechanic told me that when he drained the system down it was 2 litres short of what there should have been. So i figure the leaky tranny line would explain that. I'll post a message on my experiences with the tranny lines at some point (they were only £112 in total from Jag BTW...which I thought was a real bargain).
So my new problem is that I cant decide whether to replace the steering pump or not. There is a fair chance there is nothing wrong with it. Perhaps the noises I heard were normal or perhaps the belt was slipping a little due to the oil and muck on the pulley (although I would have thought that would screech rather than whir). Half of me says just leave it alone, but the other half of me says just change the steering pump (and probably the AC compressor too) while I've got this much access...after all they are 12 years old. Then again another half of me (yes I know thats 3 halfs  ) says the remanufactured pumps may be of inferior quality to the original pump/s fitted. Currently I am paralyzed by indecision :( but I've got my hands full because I am doing the valley pipe at the mo !'#$%
Any comments on the experiences of others would be much appreciatted.
Cheers
Steven
