fuel economy

I am surprised that there has been no comment made on the recent claim made for 40 mpg made in a recent issue of the magazine. I appreciate that it was for a 3.6 but it seems extremely optimistic to me. I am also interested in what thoughts others have on improving the economy on my v12 regards Kels

I would have bought a 3.6 if you want better fuel economy
I think buying a V12 and fuel economy do not go hand in hand unfortunately.
Or Better still than a 3.6xjs for better fuel economy, how about a fiat Panda?

Have 2 agree though with Kels about that article in magazine.
I suppose if you extensively modify your car, by spending a fortune in order to be more economical you will know doubt get better milage.
But have you gained anything if the money you spend on (improvements?) outways your fuel savings?
Also Better fuel economy but then worse performance surely??
I have considered myself in replacing the mechanical cooling fan with a pair of small electrical ones, to achieve faster warm up and also to get some better fuel economy, through not having the fan constantly on.
Also considered removing the air con pump etc, to reduce front end weight and also improve fuel economy? But is it worth it?
Also I have no doubt if i drove everywhere at 35 mph, driving like gramps out on a sunday run to the bowling club in my slippers, flat cap and smoking my pipe, I might just get Better economy.
But would i enjoy the drive or the car then? I think not.
I would be very happy with 30 or even 20 mpg I think i am lucky if i get 16!!!
Now surely thats not right for a 3.6! Oh well guess i should'nt have bought a jag if i wanted fuel economy. :?

The best I have seen on the trip computer in mine is 28 mpg at 60 mph.
The worst I have seen is 6 mpg,and do I care?
Not a jot !!

Hi mrb39 if you can supply a Fiat panda with an economy kit I will buy it. (At the right price.) I was interested to know what mileage other owners were getting. Curiously enough the V12 will give best consumption figures at higher motorway speeds. If you are only getting 16 to agallon I suggest you check your vacuum retard and advance capsule and check the bobweights in the distributor are free. I am about to check that the complicated vacuum control system is operating correctly on my car.I believe that the onboard computer usually reads a little on the optimistic side when I get 20 per gallon shown I usually work it out to 18 when checked out brim to brim. I did look for a 3.6 originally but bought my V12 cabriolet at a good price regards Kels. If the car gives good consumption figures it is an indication that all is well regards Kels

mrb39

I agree with kels, my '89 3.6 always returned approx 23 mpg and I do not think this figure needed adjustment as the speedo/milometer was spot on (can be up to 10% optimistic).

Having said that this was all A road/Motorway driving at 50-60......mph, with little urban use which will make a huge difference.

If you're only getting 16mpg on a good day I think something is amiss - tho' if it's all urban work in traffic then that's probably about right.

Hope this clarifies rather than muddies the waters........ 8)

BTW Current 4.0 AJ16 returns 25 mpg :D tho' speedo is about 5%+ so make that 23.8mpg.
Libby's old '84 5.3 coupe with trip would do 1mpg if you booted it from traffic lights....Happy Days
