Be Aware- ebay car sale scams

Postby cabriolet » Sun Jan 21, 2018 10:20 pm

I am in various Jag clubs and have seen reports of Scams on eBay. I noticed a 1989 xjs 5.3 V12 with only 69k on the clock advertised for £5400 from a car dealer in Lutterworth. This itself is suspicious but I noticed that this so called Company has advertised many high end cars for ridiculous prices. Another car was a 2013 XFS with only 49k on the clock for £7.7k. I googled the private reg on this car and found that it was on eBay that ended 21/01/2018 from someone in Chorley with offers of £13499. It goes to show that if it looks too good to be true you have to be wary of the seller and do as many checks as you can. I am not mentioning the dealer as it looks s if there is a legitimate company in the same name that does not have these cars on their website.

The car dealer in Lutterworth confirmed to me that their website on eBay had been hacked and the cars in question have been removed off the site. I think we all have to be vigilant about this as it is becoming a common scam. I tend to look at the xjs soft top prices to see if there is a trend in their value. Low mileage good ones pitched at a low price stand out a mile, so I look closer at the advert. It just shows that the scammers see there is value in doing there dodgy deeds pushing these type of cars.

As eBait and scams are two words put into the same sentence thought I'd add my tuppence worth

Couple of years back there was a shortage of Mk IX for rebuild -- most of the half decent rebuildable ones had
already been done or broken for parts (Worcester Classics :P )

You'll already be aware of the PayPal scam that demands for a seemingly too-good-to-be-true "deposit" a downpayment to secure. I did just that in the US of A against a LHD Mk IX. Turned out to be a Mk IX alright but with a bootful of other bits and pieces of other cars supposidly to be "additional spares" -- Only twigged by looking at the pix in enlargement and spotting the wing mirrors that were Mercury something-or-other.

So I pulled out of the deal, having also checked with Heritage (genuine VIN) cost £45, deposit paid to JagsWorld (registered in Miami Fl but trading from Manhatten £134.90 = $200) and postage to the registration authority in Linn County (as the previous keeper hadn't informed that office that they'd sold on this rotted-out "barn find")

Appeals to PayPal all fell on deaf ears. It's their "policy" not to refund "deposits" paid via them.

So if you get entreated to deal outside of the eBay message base in the event of a dispute they can't adjudicate.
eBay in USA will give out your personal contact details on request -- over here they won't -- I got 'phoned and emailed
If you get asked for a deposit only payable via PayPal -- don't

I never heard from the seller again, nor from Linn County clerk's office. I wrote to the last registered keeper's address twice -- the clerk's office said it's now rented...

£180 down the pan -- but much wiser. So...
... always look on the bright side of life... ta dum, ta dum, ta dum te dum te dum...
Gone: '59 Mark I, '56 Mark VIIM, '59 Mark IX, '01 XJ8 Sovereign 4L LWB, '01 XJ8 Sport 3.2L, '01 XJ8 Exec 3.2L
Current: '03 Strange Rover L322
Completing re-trim: '73 Owen Sedanca 4.2L
Now being re-built: '61 Mark IX with 4.2L
