WHEEL AND TYRE COMBINATIONS

I am presently restoring an 86 XJ-S coupe and wish to fit a larger wheel/ tyre in place of the existing 215/70-15 on starfish. I had the original wheels redone but have had to put them on my 3.6 XJS (eat your heart out John Prescott, i've got three) and i've decided my posh car should have something a little different. Does anyone have any info on ideal wheel/tyre sizes that will fit well under the original arches? bearing in mind i'm not into the elastic band look.
