Hi just joined jec today and hopefully can get some advice on acquiring a decent xk8 convertible and then enjoying the car and the club in the near future. Any advice offered would be appreciated I'm looking for 2006 ish 4.2 convertible preferably 1 owner. Test drove a 2006 4.2 yesterday from a dealer and fell in love with it 93k 1 owner from new dealer wants 14,800, for that you get service history 6 months warranty full service 1 years mot and rac inspection and breakdown cover, offered him 14k but no luck. What do you recon

Look on our Jaguar Classified site and also on Trovit Cars on the net. Trovit harvests listings from many sources and you will be able to compare cars, history and values. Once you see a car please run an HPI check to ensure true title, that the car does not owe finance and most importantly, is not an insurance write off. Go to UK Vehicle for a low price search on car history. One in ten cars hides a secret past!

The service history should show a service at least every ten thousand miles. That is a full history. Anything less is a partial history. That is not all of is though. Look for a pile of bills to justify parts replacement which a car of one hundred thousand miles will have needed. No invoices show a possible lack of out of service schedule maintenance. Prices paid should be lower if the invoice pile is short of detail. It is important toi get that car on a ramp and look carefully at the underside of the car. Look for rot specifically and look for new parts fitted. A filthy suspension implies that little if any maintenance has been done recently. Also ask for a brand new MOT.

It is not necessary to buy an SEP. An SEP is short for somebody elses problem! Buy the best you can and ensure you have a comeback in the case of a trade sale. Let any current owner "sell" the car to you. Make him work to conclude a deal. There are plenty of cars out there and some are dogs. Walk away if you spot faults and can`t get a price reduction. It is a buyers market.

When I look to buy, I'm looking at one at the moment at a dealers 56 plate 9 stamps in book 7 jaguar 2 specialist drove it a couple of days ago and I was very impressed got all the toys on it 93k
Managed to get address off the logbook and went round the previous owners house who was quite surprised to see me, he assured me car was good and he only sold for a diesel as he had to drive to Sheffield regularly, one thing he did mention was that when it was 5/6 years old a Bentley reversed in to front n/s and snapped the wheel off he said repair was done by proper people and all new parts used, I couldn't see any signs of a repair or feel any probs on the road , made me feel a bit dubious what do you reckon stay away or stick with it , it's a one owner car from new it's going to come with a rac inspection report and 6 months warranty

Well done. That`s what I like to hear. Good background research.

You might attempt to talk to the car inspector and give him a heads up on the previous damage. You need to show all parties that you are not a mug, are a serious buyer and are looking for a decent car that is not hiding issues.

The 4.2 is a robust engine with all the issues from the earlier 4.0 ironed out. Check to see that the temperature gauge sits exactly half way and stays there. The thermostat can get a bit sluggish at that mileage but replacement is not that expensive. Check for power steering pipe weeps or leakage.

Try to find out if gearbox oil and filter have been changed. This really needs to occur at 60k mile intervals as now recommended by ZF. This is an important item to ensure gearbox longevity. The cost for labour, oils and filter is usually around £350 if carried out by a good independent Jaguar specialist. I`d suggest you get this work done very soon after acquisition. If you can`t find any evidence of a gearbox oil change, then I would suggest you use this as a bargaining point. Not many cars have this work done but believe me when I say it is of vital importance...especially as your intended purchase is 36k past that recommended limit of 60k. This item is not on the service schedule so even if the vendor says the car has nine service stamps, this issue is unlikely to have been addressed. Be pedantic in negotiation on this point. A reconditioned gearbox will cost at least £2500 if it goes pop!

My eyes look like xk8s I've seen hundreds on the internet probably to many im like a kid in a sweet shop, think I'll leave the other one alone the knock it had that I found out about has made me a bit dubious, don't want to dive in to quick as I want to get a good one, once I've got the Mrs in the right mood I'm hoping to have a budget of 15-20k and I've been waiting and saving for a long time for this haven't had a British motor since I was 17/18 looks like I'm going to have to travel to find one
