Just bought a 4.2 sport and very happy with it.
Re: Hello to everyone
The 4.2 is a very solid piece of engineering.
The small issues that were present on the 4 litre were designed out to make a highly robust unit. You will find higher flow injectors, a beefed up oil pump and eradication of plastic timing chain tensioners in favour of ali types which do not break. Also the plastic thermostat unit is now ali which is a huge improvement.
The gearbox is a six speeder which is smoother, more robust again and works well provided oil changing is carried out every sixty thousand miles. Around £350 for an oil change is a small price to pay for peace of mind and a good long transmission life.
Regular oil changes to the engine are also important. There is no substitute for fresh clean oil. Keep an eye on drive belt condition and replace any suspect hoses. Small vac pipes suffer a bit with heat and age degradation. £8 buys a 28" long piece of 1/8" ID pipe which can be cut into suitable lengths for replacements. The small hoses if rotted and split can cause air leaks and fault codes to appear. They are simple to replace and well worth doing to avoid typical P0171 & 174 codes appearing.
Enjoy your car and just shout if you need any technical advice. Several of us here know these cars well having enjoyed them for many years.
