Vinyl Roof

Just wondering.
When I bought my good old 1978 XJ-S it had a vinyl roof fitted, i've also seen a few other 70's XJS's with vinyl roofs too.
I'm asuming that it's just people have had them fitted and that Jaguar didn't offer it as an option in the 70's?
Only asking as the one I removed had good quality chrome edge trims and was fitted very well (ie didn't look like a home diy job).
Anyone else got an old XJ-S with a vinyl roof?




At least there was no rust under it when I removed it (well apart from a little bit).

i think the vinyle was an option, as it was quite fashionable in the day

your VIN should confirm this if you can get it fully decoded,


my 1989 coupe had a sunroof fitted, many said ' it cant be a jaguar one, as they didnt do them '

however , a decode of my VIN showed that it was a genuine jaguar fitted ( in the factory ) sunroof , and this is also backed up by the parts actually being listed in the back of the parts books ,

so you never know, lol

Just noticed 2 pre HE XJ-Ss' on Ebay (one looks very nice) being sold by the same seller (JEC member) , both have vinyl roofs fitted.
If i'd know it was or could've been an original fitment I would've repaired where it was starting to peel at the base of the buttresses and around the rear window

I have a pre he with a vinyl roof, it looks as if it is original. Hoping to dispose of it cheaply soon regards Kels

I was the seller of the 2 pre-HE cars that were listed on ebay,and yes, they were dealer installed at time of delivery. You ordered them at the time of placing your order, but apparently the factory didn't fit them, they were fitted by the delivering dealer. As for powered sunroofs,(moonroof if glass), these WERE fitted at the factory, but very few numbers were actually ordered, as I think the then price ran into the 000's from the factory!
