hood mechanism

Postby peterlisterxjs » Wed May 30, 2007 6:31 pm

hello - wonder if anybody can help me with a problem on my car> I have a 1995 xjs celebration convertible and the offside hydraulic strut which opens and closes the roof has failed. My dealer in essex has told me that this can no longer be ordered from the factory and because the factory no longer support this model part that they wouldn't fit one for me either. I have found a specialist to fit the part but the normal parts suppliers can't help me as this was a factory only supplied part.
Does anybody know where i can buy this part?

Peter,
do you know why the ram no longer works??
Is it a mechanical breakage?
It may be just a blown seal in the ram/cylinder, if that was the case, it should be possible to repair (once the ram has been removed).
Other than that, best bet is a breaker, try

Although my guess is that parts for a late model XJS convertible hood are going to be like rocking horse s#it

Thanks for your reply - hadn't thought about repairing the existing strut although i'm pretty sure it is a seal which has failed.

As you say the part seems to be as rare as rocking.

Peter,

Any cylinder from any XJS convertible should fit OK on your car. Although part numbers are different, they should all be interchangeable. This should broaden your options with breakers considerably.

Try Graham Hallett at Grublogger. I think Graham is due to be getting in a 1989 convertible for breaking.

Hope that helps.

Peter,

Good luck with sorting out the ram problem. Just to go back to your original post - I am disappointed at the response of your dealer saying that the factory doesn't support this model part. XJS parts go in and out of production for a number of reasons. So, just because a part is unavailable now, it doesn't mean that it won't be available next month! If your dealer is taking this attitude, then I suspect that they are:

a) not very knowledgeable about the spares supply situation, and
b) not interested in XJS's.

This is sadly becoming the situation with a number of dealers. My suggestion would be to continue to use them for parts supply (assuming you can get a decent JEC discount from them) or else go to another dealer or a good independent for both parts and service.

Regards,

Paul

Paul - thanks for replying to my enquiry. I agree the dealer just isn't interested in the car,as it's now diificult to service compared to the present models. They also quoted me £1000 more for a one year S Type than was shown on the Jaguar website.

I've found a jaguar only specialist a few miles away who i will be using from now on.

Peter, are they sure the ram has failed. Have you checked the fluid level in the pump unit. I could be something simple like one of the plastic hoses has given way. If the fluid level is down, I'd suspect a leak, and probably on the side of the non working ram.
And, as Paul suggested, Grublogger is a good place to start for second hand spares. I've dealt with Graham on a few occasions and the service is very good

Thanks Nigel - i didn't know of that firm but will certainly contact them for parts, i have Dave Marks helping me with it now so should get to the bottom of why it isn't working.I'm told it's very rare for a roof mechanism to fail , mine did a month after i got it -typical ! never mind we will have it ready if summer arrives
