Tyres for V12 HE

Postby Richardcb » Sun Apr 08, 2007 9:48 pm

Have just bought a lovely 20,000 mile HE, which appears to have at least two of the Dunlops fitted on the day it was made. Which are probably not ideal for cruising on at 85mph on the M-way with. Does anyone know if you can get Dunlop SP Sport D7 215/70 VR15 Formula 70s any more (probably not I suspect) and if not, what would a good authentic substitute? And where would you buy them? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase...sounds great :D Year/ Colour???
Re original fit tyres, too right, suggest you replace them immediately :?
I'm pretty sure the Dunlops are no longer available.
You may wish to try
Vriedenstein Quatrac 2 (sponsors of XJS Racing)
Michelin XWX
Pirelli P4000
I used to run on the Pirelli's, as recommended by Jaguar for the XJS. You should be able to get them for a hundred pounds or less all in from your local dealer, tho he may tell you they are not available..........this is not true. Rather they are rarely purchased and so are not stocked in most places and they probably haven't sold any for years.
In fact they ARE available by special order from Pirelli, should be following day delivery.. 8)
I can't comment on the Vriedensteins or the Michelins but the Pirellis are good tyres, good grip, no tramlining problems etc. and reasonably hard wearing...I would expect to get 25,000ish out of them.
You may, however experience problems if you mix tyre makes/types, especially on the same axle
Take a look at various tyre discussions in the suspension section.
Best Wishes

Thanks very much for the advice - will check out the Pirellis. Sounds like I'll have to go for the full set of five....

Car itself is an '81 HE, totally standard, in chestnut with tan trim. I'm the third owner. It's amazingly rust-free and straight, but has a couple of lttile things to get sorted, and having young tyres under it is one of them.

Full set of five..............ouch!
Can you put two non-original but good tyres onto either the front or rear??? Even if only to spread the expenditure over a period of time.ie two now, two later etc. Bear in mind that unless you anticipate doing large mileages the spare should only ever have to "get you home" :)
Good Luck
