Oil Cooler

True, in theory bin it and use shorter bolts. Its a gasketless metal to metal joint using hylomar but damned if I could get it oil tight.

Tel, you may have more luck. Let us know how it goes.

Oil Cooler

Postby PaulE » Tue Mar 02, 2010 12:58 am

This subject keeps cropping up and here it is again. It was well covered following my entry May 20th 2008 when two confusing articles had been published in the Club mag. advocating the removal of the engine oil cooler and substitution of a 'one off' heat exchanger. All still there if you look back. I have consulted several knowledgeable people and they all agree that the oil cooler is not really needed, but I am leaving well alone until it gives trouble when the Jaguar bypass pipe will be substituted. Hope this may help Plowe, but if you are actually meaning your gearbox oil cooler which is an integral part of your rad it is another topic and potential source of trouble which you may be better not worrying about at present. You look to have a fairly full list at the moment and best of luck with it. You will find help and support here.

Oil Cooler

Postby Telsmoneypit » Tue Mar 02, 2010 1:03 am

I shall elaborate....

Oil cooler let go in November about a mile from home and did a passable impression of the Exxon Valdez on the way back :(

Upon inspection it turned out that the four small 'cotton reel' mounts had all sheared and the cooler itself was now 'floating'. I am assuming that this movement wore a hole in the oil rad (just above the return union).
Looked at prices for cooler and hoses on Manners site and once I'd recovered from heart attack, decided to look elsewhere....

Bought oil rad from a butcher on ebay for thirty quid in the vain hope I could grind the unions off thus saving the rad. Nope. Didn't work the ally still stripped, still worth a try I suppose....

I am now looking for an aftermarket cooler with unions that won't strip when removed but until then I still need to get a drivable car to the bodyshop for some SERIOUS work and respray. The poor bloody thing hasn't moved since November and I've just had to tax it (£190) so it can continue to not go anywhere! I am at the mercy of mother nature and have no dry storage

I don't want to scrap it, but its not looking good at the mo....

Pop didn't use the correct 'bodge grease'.

No problems at all with leaks since removal of the sandwich adaptor.

I must admit I am a little concerned that the 'by pass' valve is now out of the loop, but it hasn't blown up yet....
