I have thought of buying a spare myself - does anyone know if one person can move it or is it too heavy i.e. to lift from the boot of the car into the garage??

BB,

If you read the listing, it's not the fact it's a library picture, it's the fact that it says NEW at the top of the listing. I think that's why we're having the debate about if it's new.

Don't disgree that the price seems OK if it's a decent one.

Time is up now anyway. In typical Ebay fashion, it was described as being suitable for series III and XJ12 (which could be XJ40 or even X300) as well as xjs with a photograph of something similar, but not what was being offered.
Typical misleading comments made by a seller who likely means well, but does little to help anyone in desperate need of a replacement item. Whether it was worth a bid or not I will not make a comment on, that is for whoever wished to decide to bid.
The fact is, that although the price may have looked good, you don't actually know what you've bidded for, which is exactly how to view Ebay. A global car boot-sale, many great items at good prices, but only if you have the knowledge to know exactly what you are buying, and some luck added on.
Buyer beware

It is quite easy for one person to lift.

In typical Ebay fashion, it was described as being suitable for series III and XJ12 (which could be XJ40 or even X300).
If buying one of these from ebay or elsewhere, only pay once you have actually seen it yourself. Pay on collection rather than using Paypal.
These front subframes seem to be consistant in basic structural dimensions across the spectrum of series I II and III XJ6/12 and pre & postfacelift XJS, but will not be suitable for XJ40/X300.
My own experience is that a lot of the series I & II XJ subframes are usable, while most XJS subframes exhibit penetrating corrosion at some point or other once stripped down, with the series III XJ occupying a middle ground.
As to price, I saw what I believe to be a new old stock crossmember at the last Stoneleigh sale that had just been bought for £50 (I wish I had seen it first) but this would have to have been lucky purchase of the week. I understand the current price new is in the order of £850 + VAT where available.
Regards,
Robin.

Just to give you an update in case you thought I'd crawled under a stone and cried my heart out.

My friend has nearly finished building his garage so he can soon start work on my car (2 weeks time hopefully?) and I've finally found a good front subframe. :P

Take a look at these photos.

Look nice don't they! 8)

In case anyone is interested they are from http://www.eurojag.com/
The same firm as the article in this months JEC magazine.

They are imported from the US and then shotblasted and resprayed.
He's got another 5 coming in on Friday if you are interested.
I cant really tell you how much I paid because he did a very nice deal over the phone and I am well pleased.

Hopefully will be delivered this Monday and then its just a case of getting my friend to just drop it in.......... ha ha, I wish. :?

I'll keep you posted.

Just an update...............

The subframes never arrived.
When they came in from the US they were in no fit state to sell to customers.
I'll give Eurojags their due as they were upfront about it and said they couldn't let me have them in that state and would refund me the money.

Oh well the search continues. :?

Just had a reply to a couple of emails.
They look quite hopeful.

Gordon,

If you are still looking for a front subframe, either come and see me at Jaguar Day in the Midlands, Broughton Castle, near Banbury on Sunday (tall, large hat, outside pitch) or give me a call on 02476 311 677 or 07850 387 184.

Pop - don't worry, the lines between JDC and JEC are very blurred in the midlands. Just turn up and have a good day.
Robin.

Thanks for the offer Robin, but I just read your post after a long day in London, so won't be able to make it.

I think I might have sourced one now.

Change of plan, can't make it now. Shame I didn't know about it a couple of weeks ago, maybe we need an events forum?
There are many good meet-ups reported in the white booklet with the main JEC mag but often they don't give a lot of notice or only reported after the event.
