Timing chain tensioners
Moderators:GJS-typeR, Montana5
It is not unusual for V8 owners to make their own tools for the work.
It would be excellent if you could document the dimensions.
Please let us all know how your job progresses.

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Mike,
I am very lucky because when working for my compagny, I have acces to some training after working. I Since many years, I learnt to work the metal with some hammers in order to do what you whant.
I it marvelous when you whant to repair some body parts.
I never had to work on my Jaguars because they are perfect (even if my XJS break are glued and my S type needs new tensioners), however, I have a car with a specific body made by Zagato that I am rebuilding.......
I will make some drawing and pitcures
Richard

Perhaps you have some pictures of your Zagatto that you could post on the XJS Bulletin Board? The guys would like to see them.
Good luck with making the tools.

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Hi,
I am very lucky, because this morning I discovered a very small garage in my village.
I had the information with the JEC south West in france network. It is a garage that is used by one member who have a S type V6, an E Type and a MKII.
The guy replaced the tensioners on a V8 and he made the tools !!!!!
However, I lost them.... I will try to found them in the next weeks. I go to California on monday and to UK (in north of london) the week following. I will work on my S when I will be back.
This morning, I measured the camshaft to provide the plan of the tools. If I found some time, I will make adrawing and provide it to the BB.
I am confindent that I will be i position to cross the channel end of August.... We will see!
My first Jaguar party !! For a guy that don't like english car but the small italian one !!!!

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Wel,
I received the spares in France from Nevile.
The new tensioners, the gaskets and the water expansion tank.
However, the tanks is not the corect one !
I assume that the UK tank is specific (LHR/RHD....) !!! I will not change the tank today ! I had an issue to remove the fuel tank pipe to remove the left rocket. Which one that is blocked with a green piec of metal. I tried many technics to remove the plactic tune from the matal tube ... I failed.
After many §%00àà*pàopn, I found THE solution take a look on the picture.
I measured the dimension of the tube and I cut a piece of tube in plastic with the same syze and I pushed..... It is so easy... The tube goes! ! ! ! I removed the to rocker, now I need to found the tool to block the camshaft!
I decided to change my spark plug.... Whereas the original one are NGK 11E, which one the dealer provide me was only 11 without E!
I need to come back to the dealer to get the correct one.
At the end of the day, my S type is close to be in the same state that two week ago!

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Hello Richard.
There are two different models of header tank. One for left hand drive, one for right hand (UK) cars.
We discussed the fuel pipe problem on the telephone recently. This is difficult to separate without the special tool which is similar in concept to a domestic plumbing 15mm Hep2 O speedy fit unit. Richard, you have done well to make your special tool to separate the pipe unit. Well done my friend! Designed by the English, dismantled by the French!!
For those who have not come across this fitting, Richard as removed the green clip from the pipe unit. This has exposed blue and green lock rings which I assume when squeezed by the white home made special tool, allow the two parts of the pipe to be separated. This is one of those parts which can be difficult to work out how it comes to pieces!
Let us hope that you have a better time this week, Richard. Airbus 380 must seem very simple when compared to a Jaguar!

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Hi,
I foud some time to work on the S-Type.
I get a home made tool camshaft setting ref 303-530 tha I had to adjust, the hole didn't fit correcly. I made also the timming chain tensioning tool ref303-532 I removed my original tensioner. It is very good. No trace of crick.
I installed the new one. I was surprised by the difference of rigidity of the two tensioner. The old one is more hard than the new one.
I installed the new one, however, I don't like it, because the chain is not well tighted !!!!
Is there somebody that had the same experience?

Re: Timing chain tensioners
Hello Richard.
Perhaps Brake Buster can help with this problem?
I believe that the two new tensioners may be of different dimensions. Do you have the correct one fitted for the correct chain assembly?

Re: Timing chain tensioners
new tensions are the same dimensions apart from the mounting bolt frame, the mounting point is about 2.5mm shorter than the original , this makes the original bolts bottom out in the threaded hole before tightening down onto the tensioner, so the new shorter bolts must be used ( or cut down originals which i dont recommend )
the new tensioner should come with a preloaded spring held back with a ' pull-pin ' once installed the pull-pin is removed and the tensioners inner spring takes up the slack to the chain applying the correct tension ,
have you removed the pin, mine was a bright colour to remind you to remove it ??
also
have you installed the correct tensioner for the appropriate engine bank , they are handed, the spring is up on one side, and down on the other ,
hope this helps

Re: Timing chain tensioners
on further inspection of your last picture, it looks to me like the tensioner is either upside down , or the worn one for that bank ?
but can't be sure
will look at my pics

Re: Timing chain tensioners
right , scrub the above ( my ) comment,
the tensioner looks to be installed correctly , so my thoughts are that its still in its ' pre-loaded ' locked position ,
the orange pin , if fitted needs removing to tension the chain , the pin is located on the sprung side of the tensioner , and is pushed in just under the radius of the slipper against the tensioner body
and should look like this

hope this helps
