2010 X150 Headliner

I've searched but cannot find anything specifically for the X150...

... the headliner on my 2010 XKR has started to come down. It's not critical but I want to fix it.

Does anyone have any experience of repairing it themselves (fabrics, glues, removing the old biscuit etc.) or using a trimmer (I'm near Oxford)?

Happy to take any comments on the chin.

Hi Adam, you may be the first person to require a headliner repair / replacement on the X-150 model, but there have been plenty of folks who have already completed the X-100 model headliner. The supplier for those cars is:

Alas mine too is starting to sag on a 2010 MY car!

The car is Portfolio trim so I have the alcantara headlining, Im wondering if there is any special approach regards DIY and glues that work?

Headliner World aren't answering the phone... I'm minded to fix it myself.

I spoke to one trimmer who didn't want to do the job - not because it's overly hard but because it's mucky. However, he told me where to find suitable headliner - he gave me two sources and the first, boyriven.co.uk offers plenty of choice and free samples; I think I've found one with the backing I need on the reverse. They also apparently supply the glue.

Then it's a case of removing the headliner biscuit - a local independent told me that it's not hard and that all I need to do is acquire a friend and be observant. (I've already had the A pillar and door trim off trying and failing to fix the falling headliner with 3M Spray 90 so I'm halfway there). The biscuit comes through the boot without trouble (he said). Then it's a wire brush to gently remove the old glue and foam backing (the mucky part that needs to be done outside with the residues sucked up with a lawnmower). Then PVA to seal the board and wait 24 hours before re-gluing and trimming the new fabric (so that it overlaps on the reverse).

If you decide to re-cover the the original biscuit, ensure the adhesive is is of a high temperature resistant specification or you'll be doing the job again after the next heat wave

Boyriven have two options - a spray at 110C and a brush-on at 120C. The former is around £6 plus VAT for 500ml, the latter is £24 ex. VAT for 1l. Considering the grief factor, it's good advice ... to pay to get it right first time.

OK... so I've completed the task and I'm rather pleased with the result.

I ordered 1.5m of Slate Siena from Boyriven as it was (a) a great colour match and (b), importantly, had the foam backing already attached. I also bought a 1l tin of Alpha S1358 glue from Boyriven; it offers 120C of heat resistance versus 110C from a 500ml spray. Also, it's easier to control.

Removing the trim and headliner biscuit took 45 minutes. Cleaning the headliner biscuit required another 30 minutes using a wire brush, followed by Acetone to clean and then a hoovering to gather remaining debris. Applying the new headliner killed around an hour while reinstalling the headliner biscuit and trim needed some 50 minutes.

I used a (sharp) scalpel blade to trim the material.

As for the gluing - start in the middle in 10cm sections with glue applied to both the biscuit and the new liner. Press home once the solvent has evaporated with fingers gently running along the material in centimetre sections... bit by bit in other words. Once it's on it's not coming off.

Removal and reinstallation is just about doable by one but so much easier with two pairs of hands.

And it’s 99 percent perfect … with just the odd, almost unseeable, crease in the extreme corners. The colour match is pretty damned good to the eye (while an iPhone sees a different colour - oddly).

Thus far I’m very impressed and frankly, if the headliner comes down now then Lord knows what else will do the job.

All told, not a hard job which was completed for less than £80 versus a quoted charge of £820 for removal, retrimming and reinstallation.
