JEC V12 Plug Spanner

Postby Brian.P » Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:26 pm

I just bought a plug spanner from JEC... i was hoping that i could take out the front two plugs on my 92 HE V12, without taking anything off. But it dosen't work !!!... it's too short (won't go down the hole far enough)... and if it did... parts of the head are in the way, so you can't turn it!!!.... have i wasted £42 and was i hoping for too much.....
Has anybody else bought one and found this, or am i doing something wrong ???

JEC V12 Plug Spanner

Postby almcl » Sun Nov 08, 2009 12:16 am

I was considering getting one for my 84 DD6 but in a rather brief conversation with Annie Jenkins she suggested it was not appropriate for the HE engines.

I just changed my plugs using an ordinary socket and extension, but I did remove the compressor (I was converting to R134a and had to drain the oil.)

JEC V12 Plug Spanner

When I changed the plugs in my H.E. I tried to use the plug spanner supplied in the tool kit supplied with the car.
It is rather flimsy, I lost my nerve before I snapped it. I resorted to moving the compressor and using a socket set with a suitable spanner.

Trying to remove the throttle pedestal was a problem, eventually required a crows foot spanner.

One plug had a crack down the insulator. Made the struggle worthwhile.

regards Kels.

Regrettably, we have removed another post that is deemed to be inappropriate.

Brian.P,

I'm presuming that you've bought the Jaguar tool 18G.1364. I don't know the circumstances of your purchase but can I suggest that you give Annie Jenkins a ring asap and discuss the situation with her. If, as Al has mentioned, the tool is apparently not appropriate for HE engines then that is something important for the club to understand, particularly if any documentation (workshop manual etc) had led you to believe that tool 18G.1364 was the right tool for the HE engined-cars.

I will also try and find time to ring Annie myself tomorrow to make her aware of the situation.

I hope you're able to reach an acceptable conclusion.

Thanks paul for the message.... I have not read anything about using the V12 plug spanner on any message boards (just how hard it is to get them two plugs out). When i saw the plug spanner.... i thought someone has made a time saving tool, and at £42 i thought..ok, i can live with that... But the ad didn't say, it didn't fit a "HE", and "I" didn't ask.... so the old saying comes in to play...."Caveat Emptor"...or... "Let the buyer bewere....

....£38 if anybody is interested... i can't hold down the price much longer..."BUY NOW"....lol (or i'll put it on E-bay at £50... somebody will buy it... I DID....lol

Brian,

I rang Annie who spoke to both David Marks & Ken Jenkins, our technical experts. Apparently this is definitely the correct tool and is suitable for HE engines.

Please ring her - it may just be the way that you're trying to use it.

Good luck

JEC V12 Plug Spanner

As I said before the tool I had supplied in the original toolkit appeared to be to flimsy to remove plugs that were firmly in place.
I did not even try to remove the front plugs.
What is the problem? access or unable to move the plugs?
regards Kels.

Thanks paul for all your help, will ring them and try again with the spanner....

Kels..... The prob is... I was hoping to get the plugs out without taking anything off. No other standard plug spanner will get past the pumps at are sitting over the front two plugs (expcet the original XJS spanner i got with the tool kit) This fits lovely, but you have about a 45 degree angle with the bar.... I got the right bank plug out, but i broke it in the process, have about a three foot bar to get enough pressure on it. If i could get directly above it (which looks possible with the "V12" spanner), you could get more feeling with the a mount of pressure you need.

JEC V12 Plug Spanner

Postby Graham » Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:50 am

Hi All,i have bought the plug spanner also have found that it was of little use on my 89 DD6.Yesterday i began the changing of plugs on my 90 xjs V12 and managed to remove 10 without the need of the club bought plug spanner, the plug spanner from my previous x300 was perfect.Because i was changing the dist cap, leads and rotor arm i decided to leave the front two by the aircon compressor til last.I found that the club bought spanner would not enable me to remove these two plugs.
Maybe someone has info on the correct working of this spanner......not cheap to buy.

Thats what i found with the JEC spanner...I took the compressor off in the end. Its a bit fiddly to get the bolts back in (1/4 turn at a time) But i would do it again rather than try a plug spanner at a bad angle.

Brian thanks for the reply.I have posted about the compressor moving in the aircon section.Would you be grateful to post how you removed the compressor in that section as we may be in the wrong section for this.
I would be grateful.
Many Thanks

Guys,

Clearly people are experiencing difficulties in using the club tool to remove a couple of the plugs. (With an AJ16 engine, I'm obviously lucky not to have this problem!)

I'll contact Bob Jenkins and ask him to contribute some thoughts here as to the best way to use the tool to remove the troublesome plugs.

Paul,
thanks for your input.
Just to add that i replaced the two front plugs today, but i had to move the compressor the V12 plug spanner was just not suitable, but obviously that is my opinion.Any further info would help.

JEC V12 Plug Spanner

Postby cregan » Mon Jul 19, 2010 10:52 am

I have had all the plugs out of my Daimler Double Six without difficulty without using a special tool.

I've been using a 14 mm plug socket, attached to a universal joint, which is attached to a 12 inch extension bar and undone them with a ratchet.

Replacing them, I've used a remote reach grab to lower them into the correct place, then screwed them in with the aforementioned items.

Hope this helps.
